The bookies are having a hard time separating the top two in 2017 Hawkesbury Guineas betting this weekend with Calanda and Spright currently battling for the number one position in markets on the Group 3.

Set to run as Race 7 at 3:35pm (AEST) on Hawkesbury Gold Cup Day on Saturday, this season’s $200,000 Group 3 Blacktown Workers Club Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) features a line-up of 14 three-year-olds.

Current narrow favourite in the Hawkesbury Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.80 to post a third consecutive win is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained son of Snitzel Calanda.

Winner of December’s Inglis Sprint (1100m), the up-and-comer enjoyed another victory first-up over 1100m at Canterbury with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Bowman retains the ride this weekend with the gelding up in grade for the Hawkesbury Guineas, but continuing to improve and boasting plenty of winning claims again.

Hot on his heels in the markets at $5 is the nicely-bred Hinchinbrook filly Spright prepared by Garry Frazer.

She won the Group 3 Crown Resorts Plate (1100m) at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival before a first-up third behind Group 1 winner Global Glamour in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in mid-February.

Her two subsequent runs have been unplaced performances, but the last start fourth to Derryn in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) was brave and the 1400m could see her return to winning form taking on the boys again.

Equal third favourites at $7 for the win are the widely-drawn Good Standing out in barrier 13 and Prompt Response also drawn double-digits (11).

James Cummings’ Group 3 winning Artie Schiller colt has spring form last time in against some very nice types including his third to Impending in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m).

He is Group 1 performed including taking on the older gallopers for a credible seventh beaten only three lengths in the Emirates Stakes (2000m) last time out in November.

Cummings also has the youngster accepted for the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane on Saturday with a decision still pending on where Good Standing will line-up.

The Victory Stakes field features just the seven runners currently, while Good Standing will have work to do in the Hawkesbury Guineas against a larger line-up of fellow three-year-olds.

Prompt Response meanwhile represents Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, the Beneteau filly also the second emergency for the Godolphin Crown (1300m) at Hawkesbury on Saturday.

She is an ultra-consistent filly who has run top four in her past five starts going back to Cox Plate Day last October and is out to improve on her fourth to Raiment at Randwick a fortnight ago on a Heavy (8) track.

There has also been early money in Hawkesbury Guineas betting on the market mover Rosa Carolina ($14 into $11) who shapes-up as one of the best double-figure hopes chasing the upset.

Christian Reith retains the ride on the Kris Lees-trained Savabeel filly who was last seen crossing a mere short half-head off Generalissimo in a stakes race over 1400m at Randwick on April 8.
