Danish Twist Heads Breeders Classic Betting 2017

The returning Kris Lees-trained Danish Twist has opened narrowly early favourite in 2017 Breeders Classic betting to kick off her Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign with a win at Randwick on Saturday.

Due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 4:25pm (AEDT), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 China Horse Club Breeders Classic (1200m) field features nine mares.

Of those six are at single-figures in a close Breeders Classic betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au including the current $3.90 favourite Danish Twist drawn in barrier seven.

Tommy Berry is booked to ride the five-year-old daughter of Dane Shadow first-up in the set weights plus penalties sprint and it will be his first time aboard her.

Danish Twist hasn’t raced since her ninth to I Am A Star at Flemington last Victoria Derby Day when beaten only one and a half-lengths in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

She has trialled twice since for two thirds including over 900m at Newcastle on January 25 and looked forward enough to perform well fresh on Saturday.

Following closely in the Breeders Classic odds include Egyptian Symbol ($4.60) for Bjorn Baker and the early market mover Flippant ($7 into $5) who gets the rails run from barrier one.

Jason Collet comes aboard in place of Brenton Avdulla on Baker’s four-year-old Stratum mare Egyptian Symbol who won the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m) as the odds-on favourite in December.

After that she ran sixth in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race in mid-January over 1300m, but was far from disgraced crossing under two lengths off the winner.

She comes back to 1200m on the weekend and has a great strike rate over the shorter distance (7-3-2-1) and runs at Royal Randwick for the first time since her Group 3 win from October last year.

Flippant represents Peter & Paul Snowden in the Breeders Classic field and is drawn to get the run of the race from barrier one with Corey Brown aboard.

The Hinchinbrook four-year-old is third-up this prep and was last seen running fifth in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race that could prove the form line to follow into Saturday.

She drew the far outside gate that day (16 of 16) and carried 59.5kg, so will relish the inside alley and notable drop back to just 54kg in the Breeders Classic weights.

Also under $10 for the win are the Joe Pride-trained Magic Millions Fillies & Mares runner-up I Am Zelady ($6), in-form Newcastle-trained Time Thief four-year-old In Her Time ($8) chasing a third win on the trot and French Emotion ($9.50).

Hugh Bowman rode last year’s Breeders Classic winner Amicus (2016) to victory for top Sydney trainer Chris Waller and returns for the stable on Snitzel five-year-old French Emotion this year.

Waller also prepared Catkins (2015 & 2014) for her back-to-back Breeders Classic wins and so is after his fourth consecutive success in the race on Saturday.

French Emotion was last seen running second in the Myer Classic over the Flemington mile and has trialled well in Sydney twice leading up to her return, but is yet to have a start at Randwick.
