Robert Smerdon’s Group 1 performed gelding Reldas is the highest-rated and weighted acceptor for the All Victorian Sprint Series Final 2016 field at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday in Melbourne.
A bumper nine-race Finals Day card is scheduled for the weekend including a 10-starter field for this year’s $150,000 Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m).
Heading the line-up and weights for the handicap sprint with 59.5kg is five-year-old Reldas, the son of Testa Rossa after his first win since the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley back in March.
His three starts since have produced unplaced efforts he is out to atone for on the weekend, including a disappointing last start 14th behind Odyssey Moon over 1100m at Flemington on June 25.
Unsuited to the straight track Reldas has a tough task of breaking his maiden status at the course at his fifth Flemington start, but does have a strong record over the distance (12-4-2-3) he is back over in the final.
Just one last start winner is accepted for this winter’s All Victorian Sprint Series Final field with the Darren Weir-trained Voodoo Lad jumping one outside of Reldas in barrier six.
Getting in on 55kg with Dean Yendall booked for the ride, the I Am Invincible four-year-old is in flying form having run top three in all 11 of his career starts to date including six victories.
The latest was on June 18 over 1200m by 1.5 lengths at Moonee Valley, but he is yet to be tested in stakes class or at the famous Flemington Racecourse.
Melbourne Cup winning trainer Weir has also accepted for 54kg lightweight Magnus Reign, the six-year-old coming off a fourth to his stablemate at the Valley last start.
The 50-start veteran is out to break a notable drought also not having won since January of 2015.
The other two last start third placegetters in the field are the local Stephen Brown-trained Neillo five-year-old Kievann (7) who finished under three lengths off Voodoo Lad last start from barrier 13 of 13 and Ruettiger (4).
Prepared by Lee & Anthony Freedman, progressive Duporth four-year-old Ruettiger was third to Odyssey Moon over 1100m at Flemington on June 25 and has strong form over 1200m of two wins and a second from five runs over the distance.
Other notable hopes include Mick Price’s Group 3 winner Alberto Magic who carries the second heaviest weight of 58.5kg from barrier two with apprentice Michael Dee aboard and Gold Topaz third placegetter at Swan Hill last start Smackdown.
