Telepathic Tops Tattersall’s Open Handicap 2016 Odds

Chris Waller’s Group 2 placed mare Telepathic has opened narrow favourite to break a lengthy drought with a win at Eagle Farm Racecourse in the 2016 Tattersall’s Open Handicap this Saturday.

The five-year-old daughter of Mossman hasn’t won a race since the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill in November last year.

She has performed well over the subsequent months however including her Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) second behind Group 1 winner First Seal at Rosehill in February this autumn.

Her latest run was at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago when four lengths away ninth behind Cradle Me in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m).

The David Pfieffer-trained Cradle Me runs in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on Saturday looking to become the third mare in four years to win the Dane Ripper – Tiara double.

Telepathic meanwhile takes on easier company in the $100,000 Listed A M Giles & Co Chartered Accountants Open Handicap (1830m) jumping from barrier five in the 11-starter field.

She is up in distance, but is suited to the metres having won over 2000m, and drops from 56.5kg last time out to 54.5kg with Kerrin McEvoy to ride.

The bookmakers rate her to improve notably on the Dane Ripper run with Telepathic sitting top of the Tattersall’s Open Handicap odds at $2.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

She is followed very closely in betting at $2.70 by the 58kg top weight Pajaro in gate eight with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Peter & Paul Snowden’s in-form Align five-year-old has been racing very consistently this campaign including his mid-May win in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) from the outside barrier (16 of 16).

He then travelled to Brisbane for a second to Mighty Lucky in the Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup (1615m) and then a second again in the Listed The Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) on June 11.

He is up in both distance and weight off that run behind Hopfgarten, but is on the improve and could be hard to hold out.

Just two other runners are at single-figures in the Tattersall’s Open Handicap betting markets with Adirondack ($8) in the outside alley and early market mover Lordag ($11 into $9.50).

Michael Cahill takes over from Craig Newitt in the saddle of Shawn Mathrick’s Cranbourne galloper Adirondack, the Lonhro five-year-old coming off a fifth in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup (2500m) in Adelaide from May 21.

He’s been freshened-up since however, is a dual winner over the shorter distance of Saturday’s race and ran a good third behind Messene two back in the Listed Wagga Wagga Cup (2000m).

Lordag jumps from a midfield gate six draw with Jeff Lloyd partnering Robert Heathcote’s five-year-old who is out to atone for his 10th to stablemate Hopfgarten in The Wayne Wilson on Stradbroke Day.

The value in the field could lie in My Quilter ($15) who is drawn the inside alley, the Pins eight-year-old from the Sunshine Coast coming off a win at home over the mile.
