Mount Panorama failed to make much of a competitive impact in his racing debut, but co-trainer Wayne Hawkes has been thrilled with the work produced by the two-year-old and is confident he will atone in Saturday’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Jumping from the gates reasonably well in the Agribaba Aunong.com Plate (1100m) at Randwick on January 16^th, jockey Tommy Berry steered the son of Sebring forward from the barrier and took a position midfield in the nine horse race.

Receiving something of a tough run in transit on the rain-soaked course, Mount Panorama hugged the rails leading into the final straight and was unable to make up any ground over the race’s dying stages; finishing sixth.

Hawkes told Racing Ahead he is confident Mount Panorama has taken benefit from his debut and believes if his work translates onto the race track, he will be very hard to beat in the Canonbury Stakes.

“Nothing went right for him and he got caught on the inside when he should have come out because Randwick is no good up the inside when it’s wet” Hawkes said.

“He’s a bit of a boom horse, everyone saw his trial and backed him accordingly but trials are one things and race days are another. You have to do everything right on race day.

“He’s been good since he raced so hopefully we can get him into a good bit of form.”

Mount Panorama has shown plenty of ability in his short time with the Team Hawkes operation and ran second in a talent-rich Rosehill Gardens barrier trial prior to his competitive debut on January 4^th.

Only eight runners have been confirmed in the 2016 Canonbury Stakes final field, and while Mount Panorama has been charged with overcoming the outside draw, he will carry a very-manageable 54.5kgs; taking 1.5kgs off topweight Tessera.
