Stay With Me Leads 2015 Myer Classic Betting

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly Stay With Me may have history against her for Saturday’s Myer Classic 2015 win but the bookies are taking no chances with the Thousand Guineas winner who leads betting for the Derby Day clash.

One of four elite levels on the Victoria Derby Day line-up at Flemington this weekend, all of which are offered at Best Tote or SP + 20% through Ladbrokes.com.au exclusively on Saturday, the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) is set to run as Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEST).

A field of 15 fillies and mares are in the mix including the Lindsay Park-raced daughter of Street Cry Stay With Me who is the sole three-year-old taking on the older runners in the mile showdown.

While no filly in history has won the Myer Classic, Stay With Me is the current $4.20 favourite in betting to break the hoodoo.

She gets the weight advantage with 49kg, a drop from 55.5kg that she carried to victory over subsequent Moonee Valley Vase winner Jameka in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 10, with Sam Clipperton taking over for Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.

Stay With Me has also suffered a blow drawing the outside barrier 15, which hasn’t produced a winner in over 20 years, although Sequel (2000) got the job done 15 years ago from barrier 16 of 16 at 20/1.

The last Myer Classic favourite to salute for the punters was Chris Waller’s Red Tracer (2013) just two years ago.

Just two other hopefuls are also under double figures in the Myer Classic odds this year with the market mover Royal Descent ($5.50) and Azkadellia ($8).

Fresh off a Cox Plate victory with Winx last Saturday, Waller shoots for a second Myer Classic trophy this spring with Royal Descent in barrier five with Hugh Bowman aboard.

Forensics (2008) was the last Myer Classic winner to jump from gate five, and six-year-old Royal Descent is looking to atone for her last place finish in an 18-starter Caulfield Cup field last time out.

She was in flying form before that including her seconds to stablemates Kermadec in the George Main Stakes (1600m) and 2015 Melbourne Cup-bound Preferment in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m), and is set to appreciate the drop back to a mile where she boasts seven seconds and two thirds from nine runs over.

Royal Descent is yet to win over 1600m but boasts seven seconds and two thirds from her nine previous runs over the distance of the Myer Classic

The Ciaron Maher-trained Azkadellia is drawn better in barrier six, where Sacred Choice (2010) jumped from to win five years back, and comes off four straight top two runs this time in.

Luke Currie has his third ride in the feature aboard the four-year-old daughter of Shinko King who was last seen running second to Coronation Shallan in the Group 3 G1x.com.au Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.

Other Myer Classic hopes at more generous odds looking to become the fifth double figure chance to score an upset in six years include the Danny O’Brien-trained Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) winner from October 14 Miss Rose De Lago ($10), Peter Moody’s rails-drawn six-year-old Abidewithme ($12) and Politeness ($12) coming off back-to-back Group 3 Caulfield wins.
