Prince Of Penzance Heads 2015 Moonee Valley Gold Cup Odds

The Darren Weir-trained Prince Of Penzance is tipped to break a year-long winning drought and successfully defend his title in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup 2015 this Saturday at Moonee Valley Racecourse.

The now six-year-old son of Pentire leads the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, the only bookie offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the full Cox Plate Day card this weekend, to go back-to-back in the $250,000 Group 2 Melbourne Signage Concepts Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).

Twelve months ago Prince Of Penzance beat home Le Roi by over a length in the showdown before his second to the same horse who turned the tables in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) in Emirates Stakes Day.

Weir’s galloper hasn’t been able to win since his Cox Plate Day triumph last spring, but is still the current $3.90 in Moonee Valley Gold Cup betting this year.

He is drawn a treat in barrier four with regular rider this campaign Michelle Payne retaining the ride, the last start Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) fourth placegetter set to appreciate the return to Moonee Valley where he has won two of his three starts.

Hot on the reigning Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner’s heels in the 2015 markets paying $4.20 is The United States who will jump from barrier five after the scratching of the Nigel Blackiston-trained Let’s Make Adeal due to a season-ending tendon injury.

Hugh Bowman replaces Damian Lane aboard Robert Hickmott’s consistent Galileo stallion, the six-year-old having run a good second in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) before a sixth when only two lengths off the winner in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) last time out.

That was the horse’s fourth run at Moonee Valley where he boasts a win, a second and a third and he is tipped to appreciate the extra metres this weekend.

The other single figure Moonee Valley Gold Cup fancies this season are the market mover Bondeiger ($8.50 into $6) and Bohemian Lily ($6.50) with the outside barrier for her and jockey Kerrin McEvoy to overcome.

James Winks continues his association with the Danny O’Brien-trained War Pass four-year-old Bondeiger who comes off a solid fourth in the Herbert Power Stakes over the mile and a half last time out.

Despite only boasting winning form up to a mile, Bondeiger is on the improve and will appreciate the drop back from 56kg last time out to 53kg on Saturday.

Gai Waterhouse prepares classy O’Reilly mare Bohemian Lily, the four-year-old coming off a third in the Herbert Power Stakes where McEvoy also had the ride.

She makes her Moonee Valley debut on the weekend but has claims with the light weight and good run last time out.

Other notable hopes in the markets out for an upset include Bold Sniper ($10) for in-form training duo David Hayes & Tom Dabernig who won the Geelong Cup on Wednesday and Taiyoo ($12).

New Approach six-year-old Bold Sniper had gate 16 of 16 last time out when running second last to Let’s Make Adeal in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m), a run he can improve on and be forgiven for.

Taiyoo meanwhile is the other Weir-trained runner in the race this spring, Mark Zahra riding the Haradasun six-year-old who has a solid Moonee Valley record (3-1-1-0) and will enjoy returning to the track for the first time since his Listed Torney Cup (2500m) victory over this track and distance back in February.
