Group 1 Winners Confirmed in David Jones Cup Field

Ten horses have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.

Stratum Star has returned to racing in career-best form this time and has been confirmed for a return to 2000m for the first time in spring in the David Jones Cup.

A strong and consistent performer for Darren Weir through autumn, Stratum Star ran third in each of the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) before placing second in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m).

Returning this time for seventh in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) on August 15th, the talented son of Stratum progressed to third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) before posting a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 26th.

Having run on for third in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) last weekend, Stratum Star should receive a dream run in the David Jones Cup from barrier 2.

Fenway returned to winning form at her last start and could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 5 with regular hoop Blake Shinn aboard.

Capping a strong debut campaign last spring a close third in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), Fenway returned this year for consecutive fourth place finishes in each of the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) before charging home to win the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Returning to the paddock after running second in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) on May 2nd, the High Chaparral mare clearly needed the run when ninth in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) first-up this time, but delivered a commanding win in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) a fortnight ago.

Dibayani was unlucky to miss inclusion in the final field for the 2015 Caulfield Cup on Saturday, but will contest the 2015 David Jones Cup in place for the feature race.

A standout in Hong Kong through his 2014 campaign, Dibayani finished third in each of the Group 1 Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Hong Kong Derby (2000m), and second in the Group 1 Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) most notably.

Debuting in Australia for third in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 15th, the Shamardal gelding again placed third in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) but failed to fire and ninth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) last time out.

Thunder Lady has taken a few runs to find form this time, but will leave from the rails draw in the 2015 David Jones Cup and will carry only 54kgs.

Capping a strong 2014 Spring Carnival campaign with success in the Wakeful Stakes and a close second in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), Thunder ran fifth in the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m), third in the Vinery Stud Stakes and fifth in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) most notably in autumn.

Having beaten only one runner home through her first three starts this time, the daughter of Mastercraftsman ran a close second in the Benalla Cup (2046m) last time out and will partnered by Damien Lane on Saturday.

Ladbrokes.com.au is offering top tote or SP plus 20% on all races at Caulfield on Saturday, including the 2015 David Jones Cup!
