Queensland Oaks 2015 Odds: Winx Firming Favourite

Despite some punters’ concerns about tipping the form of the Sunshine Coast Guineas over The Roses, winner of the former Winx is the short priced and firming top fancy in the 2015 Queensland Oaks odds for Brisbane on Saturday.

It is a full house for the feature race at Doomben Racecourse on the weekend with a bumper line-up of three-year-old fillies engaged to face off in the $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m).

Due to jump as Race 7 at 3:57pm (AEST) there are 16 confirmed starters plus the capacity five emergencies lying in wait of a run and of those just three are at single-figures in the latest Queensland Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the classic!

Sitting top of the markets backed in early from $2.90 to $2.70 is the Chris Waller-trained Winx who is looking to become just the second Queensland Oaks winner to come off a different lead-up to the Group 2 The Roses since 2005.

She drew barrier 13 for her and jockey Hugh Bowman on Saturday but if the emergencies come out she’ll jump from gate nine, which last produced a Queensland Oaks winner with Scarlett Lady (2011).

Two back at home in Sydney Winx was runner-up to Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) and then handled herself extremely well when dropped back to a mile when she came from last to first to win the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) on May 16.

Will that form stack-up though? That’s the question on everyone’s lips including those of rival Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse who saddles-up the main danger on Saturday in this year’s The Roses winner Bohemian Lily.

Suffering a massive blow with a horror barrier 10, into 15, draw the daughter of O’Reilly cannot be faulted on her lead-up form and pays $5 to win and hand jockey Blake Shinn with his first victory in the race.

Waterhouse meanwhile has won the Queensland Oaks once before but it was back in 1998 when Zacheline got the job done from barrier 10 of 16.

Winner of the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) in her Sunshine State debut in late April, Bohemian Lily went on to run second to Waller’s other Oaks hope Ballet Suite in the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m) at Doomben on May 9 before her four length romp in The Roses over the 2020m at Doomben last Saturday.

The last of the fillies under $10 for the Queensland Oaks win on the weekend is then Sebrina at $8 in from $10.

Drawn a treat in barrier eight for Glen Boss, the Bjorn Baker-trained Sebring filly has a huge wrap on her following some excellent lead-up form in Sydney.

Third to Slightly Sweet first-up in the Group 3 James Carr Stakes (1400m) in April she won over the Warwick Farm mile in the wet two back and comes off a fourth to Queensland Derby hopeful when having no luck on a Heavy (10) Randwick track last weekend, Sebrina badly caught up but still only beaten two and a quarter lengths.

The next best in Queensland Oaks betting representing nice value in the markets are then the likes of Winx’s stablemate Ballet Suite ($10) with work to do from the outside alley who comes off a win in the Princess Stakes at the track and the Robert Smerdon-trained Schweppes Oaks fifth placed Ungrateful Ellen ($12) last seen running third over 2500m in Adelaide.

The rest of the field is at surprisingly long odds and there’s plenty with genuine claims for a boilover including the Bart & James Cummings-trained Princess Stakes third placed Hussonet filly Zarzali ($18), ATC Oaks fourth placed Snitzel filly Rustic Melody ($21) and Col ‘N’ Lil ($34) who is surely over the odds after being the next best in last weekend’s The Roses.
