Waller Dominates 2015 Eagle Farm Cup Field

Sydney’s premier horseman Chris Waller has an absolute stranglehold over Saturday’s Eagle Farm Cup 2015 field, the master trainer saddling up five of the seven horses accepted in a diminutive field for the Queensland Oaks Day support act.

Set to run as Doomben Race 4 at 1:57pm (AEST), this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Pages Event Equipment Hire Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) has attracted only seven contenders.

The first five of those hail from the star stables of Waller who won last year’s race with Moriarty, the horse back to defend the title bringing four of his stablemates with him.

Sitting top of the Eagle Farm Cup field with the number one saddlecloth and top hoop James McDonald to ride is triple Group 1 winner Foreteller, the Dansili eight-year-old after his first win since taking out the 2014 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield last September.

Foreteller comes via a run in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in tougher company at the track over 200m shorter on May 9 when sixth, beaten four lengths, behind Gai Waterhouse’s classy French import Pornichet.

The veteran is drawn in barrier two and on his inside in gate one on the rails is the defending Eagle Farm Cup winner Moriarty who the in-form Blake Shinn will ride.

Clodovil seven-year-old Moriarty won this race 12 months ago with Nash Rawiller aboard before backing up with a second to Floria in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) to see out his Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival raid.

Moriarty is in good form once again, the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic winner in Perth from December coming off a fourth in the Doomben Cup, which could be the form line to follow in Saturday’s showdown.

In gates three and four respectively for Team Waller are then his 2013 Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur for jockey Tommy Berry and Index Linked, a European import coming off a purple patch of form.

A seven-year-old son of Dansili, Index Linked ran second to Epingle in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast on Anzac Day before his win in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) on May 16 at the Sunshine Coast.

Rounding out Waller’s hopeful horses is then the oldest of the lot, I’m Imposing in the outside barrier (7) with Tye Angland booked for the ride on the nine-year-old Danehill Dancer gelding.

I’m Imposing comes off a string of third place runs with Angland aboard in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m), Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and then last Saturday’s Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) behind stablemate Strawberry Boy.

Finishing off the field are then Michael Kent’s recent Chairman’s Handicap winning mare Epingle out to improve on her Doomben Cup ninth when beaten over six lengths and the Andrew Campbell-trained Kiwi raider Werther who adds another level of interest to the race.

Drawn in gate six the young three-year-old Tavistock gelding won the Group 2 Chairman’s Stakes (2100m) in the wet back in NZ before travelling down under to run second on debut in Australia behind Delicacy in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 9.
