Queensland Oaks Next for 2015 Sunshine Coast Guineas Winner Winx

Chris Waller’s plan to have his smart Sydney filly Winx cherry ripe for the Queensland Oaks at the end of the month looks to be paying off after she stormed home from last-to-first for an amazing Sunshine Coast Guineas 2015 win on Caloundra Cup Day.

All along Waller has set the Street Cry filly for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben on May 30, and she’ll be leading the Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the back of her strong success at the Sunshine Coast this weekend.

In her first win since beating home the boys in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill in mid-March, Winx lined-up in the $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) as the favourite with the bookies predicting her class to shine through.

And shine through it did with the widely-drawn three-year-old coming from gate 15 of 18 to round up all 17 of her rivals and steal the show by a notable margin in the end.

Not having run since a second behind Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 11, Winx was dropped right back in distance off her freshen-up going down to a mile for the Guineas with Waller hoping that would be the right move ahead of the Oaks over its amended distance of 2200m this year.

The challenge was there for her from the wide alley in the big field and connections had to sit through a nervous race after jockey Larry Cassidy took her right back in the field.

Leading them round was the lightly-raced Gai Waterhouse-trained Skylimit from the Shaune Ritchie-trained Kiwi Redeem Code on the outside, last start Ipswich winner Right Or Wrong in third and the in-form local Worthy Cause in fourth shooting for another Group 3 win after taking out the Gunsydn Classic at the Gold Coast last start.

After jumping away okay Winx meanwhile went back to third and then second last, before going right back to sit behind them all.

Skylimit kicked away into the straight 400m out while Winx was last with all the work to do.

It became a two horse race between the John Zielke-trained Worthy Cause and Peter Moody’s Sebring colt Ulmann who put himself in the race late before Winx ($2.80) arrived on the scene coming from the rear to storm down the outside.

On the line she had over a length to spare over Ulmann ($31) with the 2015 Queensland Derby-bound Worthy Cause ($6.50) holding for third in a fine effort leading up to his test on Stradbroke Handicap Day at Doomben Racecourse, June 6.

Along with the now sure-to-be favourite Waller chases his first Queensland Oaks win this year with another top hope in the markets Ballet Suite who was last seen winning the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m) at Doomben on May 9.

Updated Queensland Oaks betting markets are due out shortly at Ladbrokes.com.au making now the time to head along and open your account to back Winx at the right price this winter!
