2015 Kindergarten Stakes Field Features Furnaces

John O’Shea’s well-tried two-year-old Furnaces is the headline acceptor for the opening race on Doncaster Mile Day in Sydney on Saturday, the Kindergarten Stakes 2015.

The first of 10 races on the all black-type program at Royal Randwick for Day 1 of The Championships, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Widden Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) jumps at 12:10pm (AEDT) and features a final field of nine juveniles.

Wearing the number one saddlecloth for the powerhouse Godolphin stable is James McDonald’s mount, Furnaces, jumping from out in barrier seven.

The Exceed And Excel colt won on debut last October and has three subsequent runs including a brave second to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Vancouver in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 7.

He only managed to run sixth in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at his latest run but was far from disgraced when just two lengths off the Gai Waterhouse-trained winner, the drop back in class working in his favour this weekend.

Two other runners in the mix are also non-maidens along with Furnaces with Redzel and Tempt Me Not looking to become dual winners with a Kindergarten Stakes success story on Saturday.

Jumping from barrier four with Hugh Bowman retaining the ride, the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel colt Redzel comes off a win on debut over 1100m at Warwick Farm on March 19.

Tempt Me Not is drawn well in barrier two with Craig Williams in the saddle, the Bart & James Cummings-trained Strategic filly taking on the boys here after a win at Newcastle over 900m on March 28.

She’s the best tried in the field with five previous runs, including a fifth to Fireworks when just over a length off the smart winning first-up back in January in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

The other most notable hopes are the returning Team Hawkes-trained Sooboog in barrier three for Tommy Berry and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Magic Diamond with the rails run.

Snitzel colt Sooboog debuted in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) at this track back in early October last year and finished a nice second to Vancouver.

He has had two lead-up Sydney trials ahead of his first-up run on the weekend for a win over 900m and a second over 896m on March 30.

Magic Diamond meanwhile had her first run at Warwick Farm on March 25 where the Not A Single Doubt filly showed a liking for bottomless tracks when a nose away second on the Heavy (8) course that day.

John Thompson’s Mossman gelding Local Affair and Ad Valorem filly Valuchy, who both ran fourth on debut last start, round out the non-debutants, while Meteora Miss and Regatta Rebel have their first starts in the Kindergarten Stakes this year.
