I’m Imposing and Multilateral Go Head to Head in 2014 Festival Stakes

Richard Callander will be stuck between a rock and a hard place this Saturday when two horses he part-owns go head to head in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.

It will be the first time Callander has had multiple runners in a black-type race with both I’m Imposing and Multilateral due to tackle the $100,000 race.

Both are double figure hopefuls in the Festival Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au. I’m Imposing is available for $18 while Multilateral has significantly drifted from his opening price of $26 out to $41.

Though he admits to a bit of bias, the owner is confident eight-year-old gelding I’m Imposing is a contender.

“No-one thinks your kids are as beautiful as you do, and nothing improves a horse’s ability like ownership,” Callander told Sky Racing.

However his claims aren’t without merit; the gelding has the form to support success in the 2014 Festival Stakes.

I’m Imposing finished second to eventual Epsom Handicap winner He’s Your Man over the same course and distance in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) on August 2, which he duplicated once again on October 25 in the Sydney Markets Filante Handicap (1500m).

Monton beat him home by a neck in that race and the pair will face off again in the Festival Stakes. However, I’m Imposing will have a 4.5kg weight turnaround advantage. The two horses both carried 58.5kg last time out but I’m Imposing will carry just 55.5kg on Saturday while Monton will carry the top weight of 60kg.

The gelding was last seen finishing second last in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 8 but Callander believes punters should disregard the run.

“It can happen at Flemington where if they go too hard then sprint, the backmarkers don’t get into the race and he just never got into the race,” he said.

“You’ve just got to put a line through it. And it was a Group One on one of the biggest days of the year.”

The Festival Stakes will be five-year-old gelding Multilateral’s first start this campaign. He was last seen running second last in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) and may struggle to step down to the 1500m trip, running over 1800m or longer his last six times out.

Callander will need to get used to having two runners in the same race as both horses are slated to take on the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) over the coming months in the Sydney Summer Carnival.
