2014 Caulfield Cup Betting Market Movers

The Caulfield Cup 2014 field is set to jump at 5:40pm (AEDT) this afternoon and below we take a look at the money trail to see who the early market movers are for this spring classic.

Eighteen starters will line up in the barriers for Caulfield Race 9 this afternoon, the $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) losing four of its original acceptors.

International runners Dandino (UK) and Bande (JPN) join Gris Caro in the sidelines with varying leg and tendon issues, while last year’s third placed mare Dear Demi was found to be suffering from a throat infection on Friday and was also scratched from this year’s Caulfield Cup field.

In their place are then the four emergencies all getting an eleventh hour call-up to run, one of which is the Peter Moody-trained Brambles – one of the three notable Caulfield Cup betting market movers.

#19 Brambles ($21 into $10)

Trainer Peter Moody was secured a runner with #14 Lidari ($9) getting into the field but his 2012 Queensland Derby winner Brambles sat on the edge as the first emergency. He was called in on Thursday however with Luke Nolen jumping off the stablemate to ride this six-year-old who spent nearly two years sidelined with tendon troubles. He now looks to have overcome those however with a string of good runs this time in including a win over subsequent Herbert Power Stakes winner Big Money (a $26 chance for the Caulfield Cup) two back over 1700m at Flemington. Last start Brambles ran third behind today’s $4.60 Caulfield Cup favourite Lucia Valentina in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) that produced last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner (3rd). He carried 54.5kg that day and goes down one kilo to 53.5kg this afternoon jumping from barrier nine which has produced more Caulfield Cup winners (5) than any other barrier since 1983.

#11 Who Shot The Barman ($17 into $10)

One of four in the race for Chris Waller, this New Zealand expat has won two on the trot at Flemington firstly carrying a big 60kg to a smart two and a half length win over Jacquinot Bay in September and then 57.5kg to a win over Marksmanship on October 4 in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m). Was strong to the line that day and drops back to 55.5kg (including a 1.5kg penalty) so is well weighted with Glen Boss staying on. Has won only start over the distance and could be looking for the two miles (3200m) in the Melbourne Cup having won over that distance in the Auckland Cup back home in March. Punters though haven’t been warned off Waller saying the horse want more metres and he’s well backed jumping from barrier 13 that last produced a winner in Viewed (2009).

#14 Lidari ($17 into $9)

Moody’s original starter the Turnbull Stakes runner-up is another well-backed galloper and bad Caulfield Cup result for the bookies today. Should get a gun run from barrier three, Southern Speed having jumped from that gate to win with 52.5kg back in 2011. This six-year-old Acclamation stallion is also in with a light weight, 53.5kg, with Ben Melham coming in to replace Nolen who jumps on Brambles. Comes off two Group 1 runs, a fourth in the Underwood over 1800m here and then the second to Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull that four of the past five Caulfield Cup winners have come via.
