2014 Theo Marks Stakes Betting – Bull Point v Cluster

In a small field for one of Sydney’s major support races this Saturday two horses are battling for favouritism in the Theo Marks Stakes 2014 odds with Bull Point and Cluster heading the markets.

Cluster

Running as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:25pm on Golden Rose Stakes Day, just eight hopefuls make up the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) which is likely to be run on a track rated Slow at best.

Two of those sit top of the Theo Marks Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.10 with the Chris Waller-trained Bull Point and market mover Cluster for Peter & Paul Snowden drawn in barriers eight and four respectively.

Bull Point, to be ridden by Corey Brown, has eased out from $3 to win second-up on Saturday after debuting as a four-year-old at Randwick on August 23 in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).

He ran on a Heavy (9) track that day and finished two and a half lengths off the winner Terravista, the Group 3 winner and Group 1 performer now looking to salute over 1400m for the first time at his fourth attempt.

Cluster meanwhile will have Tim Clark aboard, replacing Joshua Parr, on the back of an August 30 run on a rain-affected Rosehill course when second to Weinholt over 1200m in a Benchmark 85.

Tenth to stable mate Long John in last year’s Caulfield Guineas, the son of Fastnet Rock won both his winter runs and is back up to stakes company here for the first time since October.

Outside of the top two fancies are then two other single figure hopes in Theo Marks Stakes betting this year with Kirramosa ($5) and Ninth Legion ($9).

On the rails with barrier one and Jason Collett to ride, John Sargent’s Alamosa mare Kirramosa takes on the boys here in just her second run for the season.

A top three-year-old she enjoyed back-to-back Flemington wins last Melbourne Cup Carnival taking out the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) before her win over Zanbagh in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) last November.

This time in she resumed on August 9 at Randwick and finished sixth, albeit beaten only 1.7 lengths, behind Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m).

Ninth Legion for Team Hawkes meanwhile is also Group 1 performed, the Group 2 Villiers Stakes winner having finished a credible fifth in the mud behind Sacred Falls in April’s Doncaster Mile.

He too ran in the Show County Quality first-up but could only manage to finish seventh, an effort the five-year-old is set to improve on as he’s got a nice second-up record (5-2-1-0).

Also in the mix at juicer prices are then the likes of the fellow Hawkes-trained Zephyron ($11) who races for the first time since a third in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) in June, Waller’s second hope Tougher Than Ever ($11) coming off a second at the track over 1500m and the Brian Smith-trained last start Doomben winner Jetset Lad ($17) shooting for his third straight victory.
