Gold Coast galloper Teronado will be out to prove their staying potential this coming spring with trainer Bruce Hill hoping to put them on the 2014 Caulfield Cup path.

A rising four-year-old, Testa Rossa gelding Teronado was stepped up to the mile and a half last start when rounding out their autumn campaign in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 12.

Run on a Heavy (9) Randwick track, the Derby proved too great a challenge for the youngster as they got pushed back to last and struggled to make up any ground on the straight.

Eventually they crossed nearly 28 lengths away 14^th behind the winner Criterion, an effort Hill knows they can improve on.

Before that they had three other Group 1 runs over less distance and were very competitive in all.

First was a fifth when beaten under two lengths by subsequent Cox Plate winner Shamus Award in Melbourne’s Australian Guineas (1600m), then a fourth to Dissident followed in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) before their third to Criterion in the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m.

Knowing they have ability to match it in Group 1 company again this coming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Hill just needs to be convinced Teronado, who is now back in work gearing up for their return, is a genuine staying type.

If he is then their major target will be the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18.

If not there are plenty of other options over less ground for them.

“I would like to talk about Caulfield Cups but we have to win a few first to get in,” Hill told AAP.

“Also we are still to learn if he can stay.

“When we finally got up to a staying distance last time it did nothing but rain and he isn’t at his best on wet tracks.”

While Teronado is definitely Victorian-bound this coming spring, Hill is looking to add to his possible carnival arsenal with a few others looking to join their Group 1 performing stablemate.

One of those is rising three-year-old Eljetem who races in the $50,000 BMAG QTIS 2YO Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Drawn in barrier two with Kelvin Wharton to ride, the Jet Spur colt comes off a third over 1500m at the track from July 5 behind Jumbo Prince, an effort they’ll be out to improve on when stepped up to the mile.

“The penny hasn’t dropped with Eljetem just yet. But I know what he can do and we will just have to take it as it comes,” Hill said.

“Maybe it will be too soon but we will see after Saturday.”
