The Inventor Could Skip 2014 Queensland Cup

Despite having been set for a two mile run in next month’s Queensland Cup 2014 the recent Group 3 success of The Inventor could see trainer Bevan Laming re-evaluate winter ambitions with the galloper.

Plans all along this campaign have been made with the $150,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m), one of the few remaining races run over the Melbourne Cup distance, in mind.

The lucrative Eagle Farm feature is set to run on July 5 but could now be missing an entry from The Inventor.

The Jacobs Well-based Laming will have another look at next-up options for his Danasinga five-year-old following their victory in the $200,000 Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m), also run at Eagle Farm, last Saturday.

That was their third win from their past four starts and followed a victory in the $51,000 Queensland Times Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich seven days earlier.

In both of those races The Inventor got in on the 54kg minimum.

Having now won a Group 3, the Tattersall’s Cup the gelding’s maiden Black Type assignment, they are likely to be allocated more weight for the Queensland Cup.

While still eager to see how the galloper goes over the two miles, Laming will wait and see where they sit in the Queensland Cup weights before making a final call.

“It was original mission but now we will have to take a look at weights, etcetera,” Laming told AAP this week.

In the Tattersall’s Cup The Inventor was ridden by star apprentice hoop Tegan Harrison, runner-up with Temple Of Boom in the Stradbroke Handicap earlier this winter.

She copped a suspension for the winning Tatt’s Cup ride however after allowing her mount to shift in and cause interference to third place-getter Pretty Pins past the line and so will miss this weekend’s Caloundra Cup meeting.

Another Queensland Cup-bound galloper is the former Chris Waller-trained Wazn.

Purchased by Gosford-based trainer Tony Newing and owner Steve Clarke for $33,000 at a recent tried horse sale, the Whipper seven-year-old was last seen running fourth to Destiny’s Kiss in the $100,000 Stayers Cup (3200m) at Randwick on June 7.

They go up against the Joe Pride-trained winner of that race Destiny’s Kiss again in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill but are still on way to another 3200m run in the Queensland Cup.

“I bought the horse more for the opportunity than anything,” Newing said.

“Reading between the lines I think the horse reached his grade with Chris and he wasn’t expecting him to do anything further.

“I just want to see if I can switch him back on.

“He’s definitely going to Brisbane to run in the Queensland Cup and I just worry he might do too well before now and the fifth so that’s why I decide to nominate him (for Saturday).”
