Predicted wet weather in Brisbane leading up to Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap 2014 will go a long way to bringing roughie chance Reparations into the mix for an upset in Queensland’s richest race according to jockey Daniel Moor.
Moor is over the moon to have secured a ride in this year’s $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) running at Eagle Farm Racecourse on the weekend.
He may be on an outside chance in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival classic but Moor believes the Anthony Freedman-trained Exceed And Excel five-year-old is capable of surprising a few if the track is rain-affected.
Showers are forecast for the state’s capital all this week, and Moor knows the wetter the better for his Darley-owned mount as four of Reparations’ total eight wins have been on Slow – Heavy ground.
Darley will also be represented in Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap field by two other runners with the John O’Shea-trained duo of Knoydart and Emblems.
Reparations meanwhile was last seen posting their eighth career win at start number 25 at Caulfield on May 3.
There they enjoyed a stakes victory, their first win since July last year, when Dwayne Dunn guided them to victory in the Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (1440m).
Reparations carried 55.5kg from the outside barrier (10) that day, so will appreciate their 52.5kg allocation on the weekend.
The light Stradbroke Handicap weight limited the available jockeys Freedman could put on the horse in their maiden Group 1 assignment, Moor thrilled he was chosen.
“Down at that low weight, Darley and Anthony’s options were a bit limited but I’m very happy to have the ride,” Moor told AAP.
“The fact I am already down at the weight brought me into the mix.”
He’s partnered the horse on 10 previous occasions for four victories, most recently riding them for their brave third behind Sweet As Bro (1st) and Sistine Demon (2nd) in the Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) in February.
His good association with the horse, the light weight and the possibility of rain all combine to make the horse a good roughie shot according to Moor.
While Reparations hasn’t had an official start in Queensland they did show a liking for Brisbane when blitzing a 1000m Doomben trial last week by three and a half lengths.
Pre-field Stradbroke Handicap odds are led by young filly Srikandi followed closely by Rebel Dane.
The Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane is one horse that would prefer a firmer track, the last start Doomben 10,000 fourth placegetter also set to appreciate the roomier Eagle Farm course.
“He will appreciate the bigger track,” Portelli said.
“It gives him plenty of time to come wide to make his run.
“Doomben was very leader dominated.
“The horses which finished in the first three were all on the fence getting the softer runs and had plenty of petrol at the end.
“I think Rebel Dane flattened out over the last 100 metres and I was disappointed we didn’t get the money.”
The 2014 Stradbroke Handicap final field and barriers are set for release shortly so stay tuned.
