JJ Atkins Hopes Head BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes 2014 Field

A field of potential JJ Atkins hopes for Stradbroke Handicap Day is set to face off in the traditional lead-up, the 2014 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes running at Doomben Racecourse this weekend.

The key support race of Doomben 10,000 Day, this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Mitavite BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) features a field of 15 two-year-olds.

The majority of the BRC Sires’ Produce field are in the mix for a Group 1 run on June 7 at Eagle Farm in the $500,000 JJ Atkins (1600m) including current favourite Brazen Beau.

Chris Waller’s I Am Invincible colt earned their spot at the top of the futures JJ Atkins odds after winning the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben last start on May 10.

They get the chance to go back-to-back at the track on Saturday then going up to the 1350m for the first time in the Sires where Nash Rawiller will ride them from barrier five.

A number of the top BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes hopes come off a run behind Brazen Beau in the Champagne Classic from a fortnight ago including the Tony Gollan-trained runner-up Looks Like The Cat.

Beaten nearly two lengths last start on the back of an Eagle Farm win on debut in February the local Husson colt has their work cut out for them here.

In the Champagne they got the run of the race from barrier one but on Saturday they and jockey Damien Browne have a wide barrier 12 draw to overcome.

Looks Like The Cat remains the second pick in JJ Atkins betting though, and if they handle their assignment from an outside gate on Saturday they’re sure to firm in those markets.

The other single figure JJ Atkins chance in the current odds who runs on Saturday is then the Mick Price-trained Victorian visitor Pressing.

The smart Sebring colt has had two runs for two wins to date and is out to retain their undefeated status in their Brisbane debut.

Both of Pressing’s runs have been at home at Caulfield, including the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) last start on May 3, and they will have to handle the opposite way of going here from gate eight with Damien Oliver to ride.

Along with Brazen Beau and Pressing the other last start winner in the BRC Sires’ this year is then Noel Doyle’s Gold Coast galloper Aimee.

The Exceedingly Good filly has been flying through her assignments so far producing four wins from six starts, those four wins coming in succession.

The most recent was at the Gold Coast on May 3 where she handled a Heavy-rated track to beat them home in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m).

On Saturday she will have to be at her best however after coming up with a nasty barrier 14 draw.

Also with outside barriers to overcome are the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel colt Mohave (barrier 15) coming off a Champagne Classic fifth, Magic Millions 2YO Classic graduate Stroak (barrier 13) for Bryan Guy and the Rex Lipp-trained Red Dazzler filly Sarisara (barrier 11) who ran sixth to Tales Of Fashion in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) last Saturday.

O’Shea’s other runner, Careless, meanwhile has drawn far better in barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the last start Fernhill Handicap runner-up.
