Returning local galloper Anlon has opened top of the markets for the Wangoom Handicap 2014 at Warrnambool in country Victoria tomorrow during the club’s biggest week of flat racing.

Leading up to Thursday’s Warrnambool Cup, on Wednesday the racing action there is headlined by the $150,000 Listed Midfield Group Wangoom Handicap (1200m) set to jump at 3:15pm (AEST) as Race 7.

Originally a final field of 15 gallopers were accepted, but with the track currently rated a Heavy (10) and little time for it to dry out there has been three early scratchings.

Coming out of the Wangoom Handicap field so far are #11 Jolie Blonde (14), #14 Grand Emperor (1) and #15 The Bowler (3).

Of the remaining hopes the top fancy in Wangoom Handicap betting at $3.80 is the Darren Weir-trained Anlon to have their first run since late January.

The Stratum five-year-old was in fine form during the summer winning two of their past three starts including the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

Their latest run was a disappointing sixth to Finishing Card in the Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield a fortnight later where they pulled up poorly and were sent to the paddock to recover.

Second pick in the markets at $4.80 is then Don’t Get Excited for Cranbourne horseman Stephen Theodore.

Elvstroem gelding Don’t Get Excited comes off a nice performance at Mornington back in February when runner-up to Knoydart in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m), a run the bookies are tipping them to repeat here.

Also at single figures to take out this year’s Wangoom Handicap are then Le Bonsir and Kneeling both paying $8.

Mick Price’s Choisir six-year-old Le Bonsir was tested at elite level during the spring but could onlymanage to run 10^th to Buffering in the Manikato Stakes.

Their best effort since was a second to It Is Written in a Black Type back at Moonee Valley in mid-March with their most recent run being a fifth to Natuzzi at home at Caulfield on April 12.

Kneeling meanwhile lines up here for master trainer Peter Moody on the back of a second to Halle Rocks at the same Caulfield meet, the Encosta De Lago mare with good form over the Melbourne sprints.

Also in the mix at longer odds are the likes of Fastnet Rock gelding Callanish ($10) out to atone for some poor recent form this autumn, Leon Corstens’ veteran grey Alpha Proxima ($11) and another of Weir’s hopes Lord Of Brazil ($12) who hasn’t raced since the Group 3 Sandown Stakes in November.
