2013 WA Guineas Field & Barriers – Saint Bro Draws Wide

Pre-post favourite Saint Bro has work to do if they are to salute for the punters in this Saturday’s WA Guineas 2013 after drawing a horror gate for the three-year-olds classic at Ascot Racecourse.

Simon Miller’s Flying Pegasus gelding is undefeated to date and will look to retain their flawless record when racing for the third time in the $400,000 Group 2 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m).

The Railway Stakes Day event attracted a full field of 16 starters plus the Grant Williams-trained Hudson River as the first and only emergency.

Saint Bro has been dominating the early WA Guineas betting markets following their win in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) at the track on November 9.

That followed only 10 days after their winning debut at Ascot over the 1200m.

For both their wins so far however Saint Bro has enjoyed a good run from barriers 4 and 2 respectively.

On Saturday as they go up to the mile for the Guineas they will have to be much better if they are to overcome barrier 16, into 15 if the spare comes out.

Miller is also represented in the WA Guineas field this year by his talented filly Miss Rose De Lago.

The Encosta De Lago filly earned her shot at the boys after her three quarter length win in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes over the track and distance last Saturday.

She also won the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) the run before.

While she’s one of the few in the mix with proven form over the mile, she must handle going up against the colts and geldings as well as the short seven day turnaround.

The horses that ran two-three behind Saint Bro in the Fairetha Stakes last start meanwhile are both also backing up this weekend with Petrol Power (2nd) and Moonsearch (3rd).

Jim Taylor’s Snitzel gelding Petrol Power, also out wide with gate 14, has had seven starts to date and is yet to run a bad race.

Third in Perth’s Magic Millions Classic back in February they enjoyed a stakes win one run later in the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m).

Their only finish out of the money was in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) on April 6 when eighth to Ms Funovits.

But even there they were defeated only four lengths after being badly blocked for a run.

Before their Fairetha Stakes run this prep they were a first-up second to Arcadia Rose in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m), and how they handle the extra distance on the weekend will be crucial to their chances.

Moonsearch meanwhile is in gate 15, another horror barrier for a top chance, the promising son of Danehill Express looking for a bit of luck after a number of misfortunate runs.

The interstate raider in this year’s WA Guineas field is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vitello who will be ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver from gate three.

Snitzel colt Vitello runs in their first black type race here, the dual winner last seen taking out a Benchmark 68 at Randiwkc over 1800m.

The run before they were a close third to subsequent Carbine Club Stakes and Sandown Guineas fourth placegetter Best Case in a mile race at Randwick.

This will be their first run outside of Sydney and they will be dropping back down in distance for it.

Also drawn nicely are the likes of luckless Fairetha Stakes fourth placed Terror Force (barrier four), Dan Morton’s Oratorio gelding Moet Me (barrier six) and their stablemate Low Tide (barrier seven).

The other fillies in the race along with Miss Rose De Lago are then Via Laurentina with the outside alley to overcome and Vital Importance (barrier 11) who ran second and fourth respectively in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes last weekend.
