Doubts Over So You Think Winning Emirates Stakes

So You Think will need to keep his game up if he intends to win tomorrow’s Emirates Stakes in the same fashion as he did in the Cox Plate.

Although jockey Glen Boss believes we could be on the verge of seeing an absolute superstar, doubts are beginning to rise whether the three year old can cut it in the open handicap race.

Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter has allotted the colt half a kilo above weight-for-age and he will now be carrying 52.5kg in tomorrow’s race.

Currently as short as $2.20 in some betting agencies, Bart Cummings‘ So You Think could drift up to $4 for the 1600m event as many believe he isn’t suited to anything under 1800m.

Going from a weight-for-age to open handicap event can be tough particularly when the Cox Plate winner will be up against Black Piranha.

Despite coming ninth behind So You Think in the Cox Plate, this six year old gelding has had some of his best performances over distances between 1400m and 1600m.

Although he is the top weight at 57kg for Saturday, Black Piranha has the advantage over So You Think as he has proven his ability as a miler.

Another serious contender is the New Zealand import King Mufhasa which is also suited to the 1600m distance.

After a disappointing week, David Hayes is determined to fight back in tomorrow’s Emirates Stakes with leading contender Eagle Falls.

The four year old has recently won the 1200m Salinger Stakes and although he failed at his only test at 1600m last autumn, recent throat surgery will hopefully help the gelding maintain a steady pace throughout the Emirates Stakes.

For Bart Cummings, tomorrow’s race will be a no brainer if his champion colt can get a good run somewhere in behind the pack and explode in the straight.
