Black Piranha Circles For Miracle Upset

Black Piranha hasn’t been given a hope of making an impact in tomorrow’s BTC Cup at Doomben and he’s barely rated a mention in the pre-race build up.

Admittedly his finish in 2010 wasn’t overly impressive and when coming up against a champion of the quality of Black Caviar it’s probably fair that he’s deep in betting.

However at 100 to 1 trainer Con Karakatsanis believes his horse is being massively underrated and he’s going into the BTC Cup just like he would any other race.

“He’s great, it’s probably been a bit of a blessing in disguise that all the build up has been on the Black Caviar / Hay List show,” He said.

“He’ll race well tomorrow, he’s probably only 85% fit but that’s how I want him leading into his first up run working towards the Stradbroke.”

His huge odds are better than only one other starter meaning punters have given him no chance, so finding a jockey with belief was a crucial step.

In the end Mathew Palmer was given the ride based on his unwavering enthusiasm regardless of the horse and the fact he’s built up plenty of trust with Karakatsanis over the years.

“He’s a great mate of mine, I’ve been friends with Matty for a long time now,” he said.

“He’s an up and coming young rider who I’ve got a lot of respect for.

“One of the main reasons why I’ve put Matty on is I know he’ll be out there riding his best for me, I’m sure he’ll do his best for me and the owner.”

Looking passed a few of his recent runs and the current betting line you could actually make a bit of a case for Black Piranha based on his race history.

“People seem to forget that he’s a dual Stradbroke winner and his form is quite well,” Karakatsanis said.

“He got beaten a neck to Hot Danish down in Sydney, his form over 1200m is quite good.”

It will be his first run of 2011 and as an older horse his best performances will always come early on in his campaign.

If the race plays out in his favour he’s better than a 100 to 1 hope, but a lot of it depends on the early speed.

“If they jump out and just go at a moderate tempo he’ll find it hard to sprint with the likes of Black Caviar and Hay List,” he said.

“But if it goes along at a nice tempo I can see him coming out there and running a nice race.”
