No Goodwood but Singapore Calls for Hay List after Jet Plane Crashes

Adelaide’s Super Sunday of Racing at Morphettville has likely lost its headline attraction with no suitable sponsorship or flight arrangements able to be organised by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) for boom sprinter Hay List.

Hay List

Hay List is likely to have his next race in the BTC Cup

Trainer John McNair nominated his Statue Of Liberty gelding Hay List, last-start winner of the Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick, for the 2011 The Goodwood but is doubtful to pay the final acceptance fee for the May 8 feature after failed efforts to arrange the trip to Adelaide.

“I have placed a time limit of the weekend to find out if there is a flight to Adelaide, but Brisbane is now looking more likely for his next run,” McNair said.

Five-year-old Hay List boasts an ultra consistent record of 14 wins and three minor placings from 19 starts, the only horse able to beat him this preparation being the freakish Melbourne mare Black Caviar.

Hay List is now expected to head straight up to Queensland where he will once again face off against Peter Moody’s unbeaten superstar Black Caviar in both the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 14 and the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 28.

“The horse is thriving and I want to know the timetable so I can gallop him to get ready for his next start,” McNair said.

“I’m looking at the BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000 as his two runs in Brisbane.”

If Hay List is accepted for the 2011 BTC Cup field jockey Shane Scriven, this week granted a stay of proceedings against his five-month suspension, is on standby for the ride.

Hay List’s regular rider Glyn Schofield is still the number one choice to take the saddle for the BTC Cup, but may struggle to get fit in time having fractured his collarbone after falling from Hawk Island in the Sydney Cup on April 30.

“I feel sorry for Glyn but I can’t wait to get a chance to ride Hay List,” Scriven said.

Early markets for the $350,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) had Hay List installed as the raging favourite as short as $1.20.

Now betting has opened right up with previous Golden Slipper winning filly Crystal Lily, classy mare Ortensia and Mark Kavanagh’s in-form Charge Forward colt Shrapnel all sitting as equal $6 favourites.

Currently Hay Lists sits as second elect at $5.50 for the BTC Cup behind odds-on favourite Black Caviar already into $1.18 in the futures markets.

“The BTC Cup might look like another Black Caviar free kick, but Hay List is a champion sprinter as well and you just never know what the day might produce,” Scriven said.

There’s also a chance Gosford-based trainer John McNair may be enticed to take Hay List overseas for the $1 million Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) at Kranji in Singapore on May 22nd to take on Rocket Man after star South African sprinter JJ The Jet Plane suffered a suspensory injury during training.

Winner of the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin in December, JJ The Jet Plane was working in Dubai following their victory in the Group 2 Al Quoz Aprint (1000m) there in March when injured.

The star sprinter’s career is now uncertain with the KrisFlyer International Sprint off the agenda and JJ The Jet Plate due to head back home to South Africa to receive treatment.

A statement released by trainer Lucky Houdalaki’s wife Natalie on behalf of T&L Racing Stables said:

“JJ has unfortunately suffered an injury in track work in Dubai whilst preparing for the KrisFlyer International Sprint in May.

“He has suffered a core lesion of his medial lower suspensory of his near foreleg.

“Although not life threatening or permanently career ending, it is however serious enough to put an end to his international campaign.

“We have decided that in the best interest of JJ’s welfare, he is to return home to South Africa as soon as possible, where we can hopefully nurture him back to full health once again.”
