Golden Slipper Day 2011 – The BMW Final Field & Barrier Draw

Maluckyday

Maluckyday is the favourite to win this Saturday's The BMW

Following the highly anticipated release of the 2011 Golden Slipper final field and barriers earlier today, the acceptances for one of the other feature events on the Rosehill racecard for this Saturday the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) have also been announced.

One of the richest weight-for-age showdowns during the autumn, the 2011 The BMW has attracted a final field of 11 stayers lead by early favourite Maluckyday.

Runner-up to Americain in last year’s Melbourne Cup, Zabeel four-year-old Maluckyday is coming off two fourth place finishes in Group 1 races this prep.

First-up for the season the gelding ran fourth over the mile at Warwick Farm behind Danleigh in the Chipping Norton Stakes on March 5.

Then in an upset at Rosehill a fortnight later, Maluckyday was beaten four lengths by $101 roughie Zavite in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Stepping up to 2400m on Saturday for The BMW and having drawn the inside running from barrier one, Maluckday looks set to score his first autumn win.

Current The BMW odds have Maluckday as the favourite at a price of around $2.70.

Anthony Cummings’ shock Ranvet Stakes champion Zavite is also backing up in The BMW on Saturday, the rising nine-year-old drawn wide in barrier 10 and currently rated a $15 shot in the early betting markets.

Cummings is looking at a cracker day at Rosehill on Saturday, the trainer quietly confident over the chances his promising colt Smart Missile has of upsetting Sepoy in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Along with Maluckyday, two other horses in this year’s The BMW field are currently at single figure odds to win with Descarado ($3.50) and Linton ($6.50).

Drawn in barrier seven, the Gai Waterhouse-trained High Chaparral four-year-old Descarado is coming off a second place finish in the Ranvet Stakes.

The BMW distance is ideal for Descarado who won last year’s Caulfield Cup over the 2400m.

Linton also has claims, Lloyd William’s Galileo grey coming off a second to Shocking in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington and also a winner at this distance in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield during the spring.

Other notable acceptors for the 2011 The BMW field include Ranvet Stakes’ third-placegetter Hawk Island (barrier five), the David Payne-trained Illustrious Blue (barrier three) and veteran Kiwi stayer Ginga Dude who will come right into contention if there’s rain around at Rosehill on Saturday.

See below for the full 2011 The BMW field, barriers and weights.
