Black Caviar Could Miss Newmarket Handicap 2011

Black Caviar

Black Caviar might bypass the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington after receiving a hefty weight allocation

Despite her dominant victory in the Lightning Stakes last weekend and her unfaultable dominance in the betting markets, Black Caviar could bypass the 2011 Newmarket Handicap due to a hefty weight allocation.

Peter Moody’s stable frontrunner Black Caviar continued her striking succession of wins last Saturday becoming a dual Group 1 winner at just her ninth start with a devastating victory in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

The $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington’s Super Saturday of Racing, March 12 was then named as the next autumn aim for the world’s highest-rated sprinter.

The punters quickly got on the Black Caviar bandwagon once again and backed the Bel Esprit four-year-old into a ridiculous $1.35 in the Newmarket Handicap odds at Luxbet.

Hay List, second in the Lightning Stakes a distant 3 ¾ back from the runaway winner, is the next shortest priced Newmarket Handicap hopeful at a far more generous quote of $12.

With all the money on Black Caviar extending her impeccable record to 10 straight in the Newmarket, Moody has hinted that the glamour mare may not be accepted for the handicap feature.

Earlier this week Moody named Black Caviar only a 50% chance for the Newmarket Handicap after Racing Victoria handicap Neil Jennings confirmed Black Caviar would be handed 58kg.

This is the same weight the mighty Makybe Diva carried to her third successive Melbourne Cup victory in 2005.

Black Caviar carried 56.5kg to victory in the Lightning Stakes, which would be the weight given to Hay List for the Newmarket, meaning she would not meet the boom galloper better in the weights for the first time.

Both times Hay List has faced the queen he had 58.5kg on his back.

The most Black Caviar has carried is 57.5kg when she won the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at just her second start ahead of Demerit in May of 2009.

Moody is considering a weight-for-age path this season for Black Caviar instead of the Newmarket where she would have to break the mares’ weight carrying record to win.

The highest weighted mare to win the Newmarket Handicap was Maybe Mahal with 56.5kg back in 1978.

There is plenty of confidence in the Newmarket betting, however, with the hulking size and freakish talent of Black Caviar keeping her in firm favouritism.

Many of Black Caviar’s potential Newmarket Handicap rivals are set to face off in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day this Saturday, February 26.

Newmarket Handicap nominees likely to run in the Oakleigh include Star Witness, Catapulted, Undeniably and Ortensia.

Moody will use the Oakleigh as an indicator to the level of competition Black Caviar will face in the Newmarket before confirming plans and could have as many as five starters in the race himself.

Oakleigh Plate nominees from Moody’s stable are previous Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort, Reset mare Set For Fame, last start Rubiton Stakes runner-up Avenue, Fastnet Rock colt Hinchinbrook and Panipique, who is likely to miss out sitting 24th in the Oakleigh ballot.
