Youngstar and Another Dollar run quinella again in 2018 Queensland Oaks

The Chris Waller trained stablemates Youngstar and Another Dollar repeated their previous effort by running the quinella in the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Youngstar and Another Dollar finished first and second in the Group 2 $175,000 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 12 in the last lead up to the Queensland Oaks and were sent out as two of the top chances on Saturday.

Glyn Schofield on Another Dollar ($6.50) shot the filly clear half way down the straight before Kerrin McEvoy balanced up Youngstar ($3.70 favourite) aat the 250m mark to power home and gain a last stride win over her stablemate.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained Sheezdashing ($8) was a nose away in third position in a blanket finish to claim another Oaks placing after finishing second at her previous start to Sopressa in the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Oaks (Australasian Oaks) (2000m) at Morphettville on May 5.

Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy said that he wasn’t confident at any stage of the race after the Queensland Oaks developed into a stop start affair that saw his filly off the bit and looking to be out of contention before the home turn.

“It was a tough win because I made a decision to pop out and get on the back of Aloisia and then I was left stranded without cover,” McEvoy said.

“It was a case of sit and suffer. They came at me from the 700m when I wanted to get going so I had to wait and suffer.

“She got bumped around the last part of the corner and it was a tough effort to pick herself up and get going again.”

“Full credit to my filly. She regained her composure within 50 yards of straightening up and finished with a flourish.”

“She’s gone to a new level when she’s gone out in trip so the sky’s the limit.”

Waller was full of praise for Youngstar after the High Chaparral filly claimed a second Oaks for the 2017-2018 season for the premiership winning trainer after Unforgotten scored a narrow win in the Group 1 $1m James Boag’s Premium Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on day two of The Championships during the 2018 Sydney Autumn Carnival and the master trainer said there was a chance the filly might take on the colts and geldings in the Group 1 $600,000 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben in a fortnight.

“It’s a good idea having it two weeks apart. One week for fillies is a bit hard. We weren’t tempted to back Winx up but it’s something to think about,” Waller said.
