2018 Queensland Oaks Next for The Roses Winner Youngstar

Trainer Chris Waller looks certain to saddle-up the favourite in the Queensland Oaks 2018 in a fortnight after the dominant The Roses win by his in-form filly Youngstar.

Waller has prepared two previous Queensland Oaks winners with the champion Winx (2015) and Egg Tart (2017) last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The master horseman has a genuine chance of adding a third when the Group 1 $500,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m) takes place at Doomben on May 26 after he ran the quinella in Saturday’s Group 2 $175,000 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m).

The punters came for both his The Roses runners with Youngstar starting narrow favourite at $4 and she got the job done for the punters in emphatic style.

Ridden to victory by Kerrin McEvoy, who earlier rode Waller’s Champagne Classic winner Zousain to victory, High Chaparral filly Youngstar made it three on the trot in her first Queensland assignment.

“She’s a filly that I’ve liked and the stable’s liked for a while,” two-time Queensland Oaks winning hoop McEvoy said post-win.

“She’s come here today with a nice chance after a couple of wins already this prep.”

Youngstar came off wins at Hawksbury and Newcastle respectively, the latter a three length success over 1885m suggesting the step-up in distance for The Roses would be a non-issue.

That proved true, Youngstar eating up the 2000m in the traditional Queensland Oaks lead-up when running down stablemate Another Dollar ($5) for the win.

“The 2000m really suited,” McEvoy said.

“She might even sharpen up with the blinkers on.

“The Oak’s trip is no worries.

“They always say a trip away can make them.

“It was good to get a win on her now and looking forward to the Oaks.”

Susurri led the Doomben Roses field around after crossing from her wide barrier with the likes of Ruby Red Shoes, Snogging and eventual third placegetter Highway also up on the pace early.

Jeff Lloyd’s mount, Ocean Park filly Another Dollar coming off a second in the Listed The Bracelet (1630m), meanwhile was posted out three wide going forward along with her last start conqueror, the Clarry Conners-trained Torvill.

Midrace Another Dollar pressed on with her run to take the lead, Torvill still tracking out wide in fourth and Youngstar starting to roll forward at the 1000m popping off the fence still six lengths from the front.

Another Dollar led into the turn for home and was still in front up until the final 60m when Youngstar let down, finishing strongly down the outside to steal the show in an outstanding performance going up notably in class.

Youngstar was the $7 favourite in pre-field Queensland Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au before The Roses win, the filly firming into $4.50.

Another Dollar meanwhile has shortened in Queensland Oaks betting from $21 into $6, making now the time to head to Ladbrokes.com.au for all the market updates.
