Redzel Great Chance for The Everest 2017

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy enjoyed a career best at Royal Randwick on Saturday riding five winners including Redzel who is a horse he has subsequently described as a “great chance” for the 2017 The Everest.

Also inducted into the South Australian Racing Hall of Fame over the weekend, the former Adelaide-based hoop is keen to keep the wins coming over the coming weeks and is engaged for some gun rides in both Melbourne and Sydney.

One of his weekend victors was the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snitzel gelding Redzel, the five-year-old posting a tidy two length win first-up in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m).

Despite being allocated a hefty 60kg, Redzel jumped $2.45 in the race and won accordingly with the nice margin to spare over runner-up Spieth.

It was the ideal return for the flying galloper who backed up from a Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) second to stablemate Russian Revolution in the mud at Rosehill back in March to post back-to-back victories at the end of last prep.

The first saw him defeat Counterattack at Randwick in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) before a trip to Brisbane in the winter produced a half-length success over the same galloper in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m).

Redzel is now a horse with his name in the mix to fill a slot in the inaugural running of the Restricted $10 million The Everest (1200m) back at Randwick on October 14.

Futures The Everest 2017 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Sydney’s three-time TJ Smith Stakes hero Chautauqua at $4.80 and the Team Hawkes’ star had an easy Rosehill trial on Tuesday morning ahead of a likely return in Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) on September 16.

Redzel meanwhile is listed as a $13 chance in The Everest betting, a nice price if he can make the line-up according to McEvoy.

“He’s got to be a great chance I think,” McEvoy told RSN on Monday.

“He’s come back better again.

“He seems like he’s been around forever, but he’s only a five-year-old, so there’s no reason why the best is not ahead of him.”

Also right in The Everest contention after the weekend’s race results is the Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic ($5) who won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Golden Slipper winning filly She Will Reign ($6.50) is the only other horse at single-figures in the latest The Everest markets.

Punters have to wait until September 29 to see Gary Portelli’s gun Manhattan Rain three-year-old back in action with She Will Reign down to resume at Moonee Valley in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m).
