Assistant trainer James Ferguson is confident that Qewy is primed to end his Australian tenure in the best way possible, when he lines up for the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) at Ladbrokes Park on Saturday afternoon.

Qewy has been one of the shining lights of prominent British trainer Charlie Appleby’s 2016 Spring Carnival assault, which has also included the likes of Scottish, Oceanographer and Francis Of Assisi, and will enter the Sandown Cup 2016 off the back of a win in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and fourth behind Almandin in the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Ferguson told Racing Ahead that he thought there was plenty to like about the Street Cry gelding’s run in the race that stops a nation, and believes he will carry improvement into the Sandown Cup.

“He ran fantastically well in the Geelong Cup, and really fought hard,” Ferguson said.

“If you look back at his performance in the Melbourne Cup … it was a massive achievement to get him there, but to run like he did … if you look at the bird’s eye view, he out-and-out stays most of the field.

“He just probably didn’t have that early speed to stay with them.

“That’s why it looked like he’s not travelling as well, but that’s what made them all come back – he stayed, they went a bit quick.

“He came out in great order, actually, just like he did in the Geelong Cup. Charlie and the team back home decided it was definitely worth another crack.

“We’re here until next Wednesday, so we may as well have another roll of the dice.”

Qewy has found particularly good form since he transferred to the care of Appleby earlier this year and placed second in each of the Ascot Stakes (4023m) and Summer Stakes (2816m) in Britain, prior to his trip to Australia.

Ferguson conceded that the British Godolphin team did not know what to expect of the 2016 Spring Carnival and are subsequently relishing the prospect of returning in 2017.

“We were all a bit naive a bit, to be honest,” he said.

“I can’t say I knew much about the Spring Carnival, I followed it, but not to the extent I’ve learned being here.

“It’s a massive learning experience for all of us.

“To come over here with just a few horses and test the water and see how we do, I think everyone at home are delighted. Next time, I hope we come back and nick a Group 1 somewhere.”
