Ron Quinton celebrated win number five in the Coolmore Classic 2018, his third as a trainer, with the upset victory by the gutsy Daysee Doom.
A dual winner of the autumn feature for fillies and mares as a hoop, Quinton subsequently won the race with Ofcourseican (2012) and Peeping (2016) as a trainer.
He returned in the 2018 edition of the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) with two chances in Dixie Blossoms ($9.50) and $21 outsider Daysee Doom.
It was the longer-priced of the two stablemates who proved the one to beat 12 months on from her fourth in the same race.
“It’s been a lucky race for me,” Quinton admitted.
The daughter of Domesday ran second in her lead-up last year and was one better this time in saluting in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) first-up at the track in late February.
Kept fresh for her Group 1 test, the five-year-old was again ridden by Andrew Adkins who celebrated his maiden elite level success on Saturday in the Coolmore Classic.
“Any race is great, a Group 1 is ten times better,” Adkins said post-win.
“She’s just a pleasure to ride.”
Continuing the trend of upset Coolmore Classic results as the sixth double-figure winner in seven years, Daysee Doom also became the third champion in four years to come off a Millie Fox lead-up.
Adkins had Daysee Doom racing up on the speed from her wide draw settled ahead of the pacemaker Flippant who was going along at a speed in front.
Flippant led onto the straight, but Daysee Doom dug deep and took the lead in the final furlong after fighting her off.
She had used up plenty of petrol early, but Daysee Doom dug in and continued her outstanding Rosehill record holding all the challengers at bay including the Victorian duo of the Mick Price-trained Oregon’s Day ($11) and last year’s runner-up Silent Sedition ($10) who ran second and third respectively in the Coolmore Classic trifecta.
“She’s got that speed to burn early,” Adkins said.
“We got a beautiful sit outside the leader before the first turn.
“She travelled so well, the tempo worked in our favour.
“She’s never going to give in.
“She had a horse next to her and two mares behind her.
“She’s a tough mare and it’s an incredible training performance from Ron.
“She’s take on some of the best mares in probably one of the toughest fields you’ll see.
“She’s a wonder mare really.”
Daysee Doom the wonder mare was there to be beaten late, but fought off the dangers who’d had the soft runs in behind her.
“She’s just tough as teeth and she never knows when she’s beaten,” Quinton said.
“There were no excuses for the ones behind her. They all had their opportunity to beat her and they couldn’t.”
While the Coolmore Classic was the scheduled autumn grand final for Daysee Doom, Quinton said he was keeping options open for another possible Sydney run this campaign in something like Randwick’s Group 1 $1 million Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on April 14.
“You gotta keep your options open,” he said.
“She’s tough and sound. We’ll have a think about it.”
