It seems impossible to believe the world’s best horse on turf Winx could be challenged in the 2018 Queen Elizabeth Stakes next race but the Irish raider Success Days will be there trying to give the mighty mare a run for her money.
Connections of the Ken Condon-trained Jeremy entire Success Days have confirmed the grey as a rival to Chris Waller’s record breaker Winx when she has her last autumn run down under in the Group 1 $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 14.
Success Days is set to have Hong Kong-based Brazilian hoop Joao Moreira in the saddle for his Australian race debut.
The recent Sydney arrival was spotted at Canterbury on Tuesday morning and Condon’s chief caretaker and track rider Stephen McCarthy told Racing NSW that Success Days was improving each day after the tough trip over from Ireland.
“It was a long trip over but he took it well,” McCarthy said.
“He spent 16 days in Newmarket before he travelled and he hadn’t seen another horse until he arrived here.
“He lost 10-12kg which is kind of the norm. He’s putting it back on quickly and by the weekend he should be back to where he was.”
Success Days has form around the spring’s Caulfield Stakes (2nd), Caulfield Cup (3rd) and Melbourne Cup (2nd) placegetter Johannes Vermeer, now prepared down under by Liam Howley for prolific owner Lloyd Williams.
Last July at The Curragh Johannes Vermeer won the Group 3 International Stakes (2011) crossing a half-length ahead of Success Days who will be out to further frank the form in Australia.
The feature race on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes gives Street Cry six-year-old Winx a shot at her 25th win on the trot seeing her equal the winning streak of the undefeated Black Caviar.
Last Saturday on Golden Slipper Day the country’s highest ever earner made the world record books with a 17th Group 1 victory, fighting off the gutsy Happy Clapper for her third consecutive Group 1 $1 million George Ryder Stakes (1500m) success at Rosehill.
The Waller Racing stable have her confirmed for a Queen Elizabeth Stake title defence to round out her Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign ahead of a possible Royal Ascot bid in England this June, that announcement to be made as soon as this week.
All-in Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au has the champion at $1.20 to salute with the Darren Weir-trained Humidor ($9) the danger after he challenged her in the Cox Plate quinella last spring at The Valley.
Further down the futures Queen Elizabeth Stakes odds at $34 meanwhile is Success Days out to be the first international raider to win the autumn classic.
Final Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2018 acceptances close on April 10 making now the time to back Winx to win at Ladbrokes.com.au before markets firm.
