2018 JRA Plate Results: Wagga Cup Next for Winner Tally

The Godolphin royal blue could be on show at Wagga Wagga next month with the big cup race out there a possible next-up target for the upset JRA Plate 2018 winner Tally.

Trainer James Cummings said he liked the idea of targeting the Listed $160,000 Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) next-up on May 4 with the back-in-form gelding who posted a nice drought-breaking victory at Royal Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day.

“We’re very proud of his effort, a really solid win,” Cummings said.

“We might try and win the Wagga Cup with him.

“There’s a few options but I do like the idea.”

Street Cry five-year-old Tally had not won a race since the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) in March of last year, but was an impressive winner from the back in the Group 3 $150,000 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) with Tim Clark in the saddle.

The blinkers went back on the former Group 2 Autumn Classic – Alister Clark Stakes double winner from 2016 following his lead-up fifth to Arbeitsam in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 31.

“He’s been going alright at home,” Cummings said.

“We mixed things up a bit with him, his gear, his work.

“But we brought him here really fit and it’s great to see the old fella recapture some of his form.”

Arbeitsam was the race favourite and expected leader in the JRA Plate, but the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained top-weight was very tardy into stride missing the kick and had to settle last in the run.

At the opposite end of the field leading at a solid pace a fired-up Michael Moroney-trained Radipole.

Settled second was the Trent Bussutin & Natalie Young-trained lightweight Rising Red, runner up in last year’s NZ Derby, the $19 roughie having rolled forward from his wide alley but restrained by hoop Andrew Adkins who didn’t want to go through with the runaway leader.

Tally and Clark meanwhile bid their time in a midfield position travelling beautifully throughout.

Radipole held the lead at the 600m with Rising Red moving closer as the home turn approached.

On the straight Tally was held up for a stride, but burst through between the frontrunners getting the split and moving up to run away with it late.

“He’s obviously showed talent,” Clark said post win.

“But he’s been out of the winners stall for a while.

“He gave me a great feel…he felt enormous underneath me and travelled like that throughout.

“Once he saw a bit of daylight he rally dashed quickly.

“He’s done a nice job.”

He beat home the underrated four-year-old Sebring mare Nettoyer who could head to Rosehill Gardens next-up on May 5 for a shot at the $150,000 Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m), a race won by last year’s JRA Plate upset winner Top Of My List (2017).

In third rounding out the JRA Plate trifecta this autumn was Rising Red who held for the placing having travelled on the speed throughout.
