It has been a hard 12 months for Bunbury horseman Peter Giadresco who hopes to end things on a high with an upset 2017 Winterbottom Stakes win on Saturday with his underrated sprinter Profit Street.
Nearly a year ago Giadresco was involved in a nearly life-ending accident at his Collie-based home when crushed by a half-tonne steel ramp.
His injuries were devastating and included two broken legs and a ruptured thoracic aorta.
In a miracle survival story, Giadresco spent two weeks in the ICU at Royal Perth Hospital before drawing on the strength of his family during his intense, subsequent rehabilitation.
That family includes his son and fellow co-trainer Matthew and the duo are looking to keep the miracles coming saddling-up Profit Street at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday in the Group 1 $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
A six-year-old son of Viscount, the always-honest Profit Street chases his first win since the Listed H.G. Bolton Sprint (1200m) won in the mud at Belmont in late July.
This campaign the galloper has had two Ascot runs in November and was defeated by under a quarter length in both.
First-up Profit Street was the narrow runner-up behind Dainty Tess in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (100m) with William Pike aboard.
His latest lead-up into his maiden Group 1 test was on November 18 in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) where jockey Alan Kennedy guided him to an eye-catching fourth to State Solicitor after a wide run throughout.
The Grant & Alana Williams-trained Colonel Reeves Stakes winner State Solicitor now leads the latest Winterbottom Stakes odds at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Despite the narrow loss and proven ability over the increased distance 1200m distance (10:5-2-1), Profit Street is only rated a $26 chance in the Winterbottom Stakes betting markets.
He is the underrated and overpriced local in the mix according to Giadresco who is hoping for a favourable Winterbottom Stakes barrier draw on Tuesday afternoon for his horse and hoop Brad Parnham.
“I thought he produced the run of the race [in the Colonel Reeves],” Giadresco told Racing and Wagering Western Australia on Monday.
“State Solicitor was good, but he scraped the fence while my horse was wide and I don’t think they went very hard in front which didn’t suit him.
“I think if he draws well he is a genuine chance.
“It will be a nice way to end a pretty crappy year.”
