Talented young sprinter Lady Aurelia put herself in the mix for a 2017 The Everest bid in Sydney this spring with a class Royal Ascot win in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes this week.
Royal Ascot Day 1 featured some top talent eyeing possible trips to Australia during the spring season including the King’s Stands Stakes winning filly Lady Aurelia.
Going out a 7/2 shot in betting on the 1005m short-distance feature, the Wesley Ward-trained three-year-old led over the final furlong quickening in impressive fashion to sprint clear and defeat Profitable (2nd) by a commanding three lengths with the Sir Mark Prescott-trained favourite Marsha a further head back for third.
Australian owner Damion Flower of Snitzel fame is hoping to convince connections of the up-and-coming Lady Aurelia, prepared in the US, to run her at Royal Randwick this October in the world’s now richest turf race – the $10 million Restricted The Everest (1200m).
Flower has already purchased a spot for a horse in The Everest field and has been in touch with Kentucky breeders Stonestreet Farm, who race the speedy Lady Aurelia in partnership with Peter Leidel and George Bolton, in regards to getting a runner into the inaugural edition of the race.
“There’s been no formal meetings at this point but I did make sure I sent them a text after the win last night to say congratulations and remind them of my interest for the Everest,” Flower told Racing Victoria.
“She is an out and out superstar and the Everest is the richest sprint race in the world so why wouldn’t they be interested?
“I had the opportunity to meet with her owners in Kentucky last year and then again at the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions sale in January.
“I’ll let them enjoy the win and wait for the dust to settle but I’ll be hoping to have a more serious chat about the Everest shortly.
“Who knows, it would be great if we could get her here. The owners are quite adventurous. They are forward thinking and have enjoyed travelling to England. Maybe they might want to come to Australia?”
More immediate plans for Lady Aurelia from her trainer Ward are to run at York on August 25 in the Coolmore-sponsored Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes (1006m).
All-in The Everest odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au currently have triple TJ Smith Stakes winning champion Chautauqua as the $4.80 favourite.
After her dominant King’s Stands Stakes win, Lady Aurelia has firmed into an $11 chance in futures The Everest betting.
