Due to run as Moonee Valley Race 4 at 1:50pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Telstra Phonewords Stakes (1200m) – registered as the Red Anchor Stakes – originally drew a final field of 12 hopefuls.

The early scratching of Dalradian (12) and Matty (1), drawn opposite ends of the field, leaves 10 hopefuls fighting it out in the set weights plus penalties showdown.

Heading the updated Telstra Phonewords Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60 for the win is Ken’s Dream.

He has firmed in from $2.60 and Mark Zahra is booked to ride the Darren Weir-trained Dream Ahead colt.

The youngster has done plenty right in his opening campaign winning twice, including the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at this track and distance on August 20.

His latest run was a fourth to Flying Artie in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 12 and while he may be coming close to the end of his prep, he only needs to run around that form to win this easier assignment.

Close second elect occupying the second line of the Telstra Phonewords Stakes betting markets at $2.90 is the early firmer, Archives (in from $4).

He jumps one on the inside of Ken’s Dream and is third-up for Godolphin.

The John O’Shea-trained Helmet colt is beautifully bred and ran second in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight two back.

His latest run in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) produced a ninth and suggested he is a sprinter.

So he drops back in distance here off the freshen-up and should be sharp.

There looks plenty of value in this field however with other genuine chances at the title paying more generous odds including Lindsay Park’s proven Moonee Valley performer Dam Ready ($6.50), last start Warwick Farm winning Northern Meteor colt Palladian ($7) out to frank the Sydney form and Highland Beat ($13) out to atone for the Blue Sapphire seventh.

So will the favourites salute or should you be backing a longer-priced fancy to score an upset Cox Plate Day result in the fourth?

Our 2016 Telstra Phonewords Stakes Trifecta Tip is #5 Dam Ready from #2 Archives and #4 Highland Beat

1st

#5 Dam Ready ($6.50)

Sticking with Dam Ready from the damn good gate (3). He hasn’t done much wrong over his six starts and is perhaps a touch unlucky to have recorded just the one win. That success came at Moonee Valley where he has lined-up three times for three runs in the money. His form at the tight track stacks up well, and last time out at the track / distance on Stutt Stakes Night he was only beaten 1.1 lengths. He’s been freshened-up since, has form around the best in this and is worthy of another win.

2nd

#2 Archives ($2.90)

Shorter price and firming, this market mover has James McDonald coming aboard in place of Craig Williams and the last time the two partnered up, this colt won the Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane during the winter. First-up down the straight he was very impressive, and he’ll be back to his best form dropping back from 1400m to 1200m. Didn’t handle the extra meters ridden up on the speed, so if he sits back and follows something in he’s a winning chance.

3rd

#4 Highland Beat ($13)

Good price for the Lindsay Park son of Exceed And Excel who ran seventh mid-field in the Blue Sapphire at Caulfield last time out. He has been better than that around nice types including the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) second to the still unbeaten Russian Revolution and Group 3 McNeil Stakes second to Defcon. Has had one run for one win at the Valley so keen to see him back here with blinkers going on so he’ll  be up on the speed and not having to play catch-up like last start.
