The Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes is a 1200m sprint held at Moonee Valley Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival in late October on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day.

Held under set weights with penalties conditions, the Red Anchor Stakes is restricted to three-year-old sprinters and offers $200,000 in prize money.

The Red Anchor Stakes is held on Cox Plate Day alongside a host of other Group status spring features. These include the renowned Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m), Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m), Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) and Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m).

Classier types tend to perform well under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the Red Anchor Stakes. Some fairly decent young horses have gotten up over Group 1 types in recent years, so when punting don’t be too quick to immediately jump on the well known horses.

Horses tend to target the Red Anchor Stakes following runs in races with similar conditions and similar distances including the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) over the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

Following the Red Anchor Stakes, some runners may go on to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), run a week later at Flemington Racecourse on VRC Derby Day.

The 2020 Red Anchor Stakes form was later franked with the winner Portland Sky winning the following autumn’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.

The 2023 Red Anchor Stakes ran at the Moonee Valley track on Saturday October 28, 2023 as part of Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day and was won narrowly by the Matt Laurie-trained favourite Archo Nacho ($2.60F).

2023 Red Anchor Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Red Anchor Stakes 2023 Tips on the potential Coolmore Stud Stakes lead-up this spring.

  • To Win: #1 Barber ($5.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW

There are horses coming off better runs with less weight but sticking with the class factor and have Group 1 performer Barber on top to return to his best. The James Cummings-trained Exceed And Excel colt carries the 58.5kg top-weight but is fit third-up here showing potential again this prep. Sixth at Rosehill last start was better than it looks on paper in the Group 2 Roman Consul when only two lengths beaten. Same distance but down in grade here he can win.

2023 Red Anchor Stakes Field

The Red Anchor Stakes field tends to attract three year olds who have had fairly extensive preparations already that season. Horses that run in the Red Anchor Stakes field usually do so following several black type races already that season including Sydney’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) or Caulfield’s Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) in September.

Sejardan (6th in 2022) was the last Roman Consul Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Red Anchor Stakes on Cox Plate Day, while Sweet Ride ran second in both events that year.

The 2023 Red Anchor Stakes field and barriers are released on the Wednesday leading-up to Cox Plate Day and will be published in full below.

The Red Anchor Stakes 2023 final field features a smart line-up of three-year-olds facing off in the last on Cox Plate Day led in betting by Grahame Begg’s last start winner at the track Maharba
