A smart field of proven and promising three-year-old fillies take to the Caulfield track on Saturday for this year’s edition of the 2016 Thousand Guineas, betting tips and the latest odds for which are found below.
Fifteen fillies are in the mix for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the set weights feature to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEDT).
Heading the latest Thousand Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Chris Waller-trained Foxplay ($3.40) who has eased out notably from her opening odds of $2.60.
She ticks plenty of boxes including drawing the race’s most successful barrier (5), which has produced five Thousand Guineas winners in the past 30 years.
But can she hand Waller with his second Thousand Guineas success in three years, or is the value in the Thousand Guineas market mover Global Glamour ($5 into $4.20) on the quick back-up after winning last weekend’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) or the Perth filly Whispering Brook ($10) who had no luck in the Prelude run last start?
Earlier in the week we published our insider 2016 Thousand Guineas Form Guide & Preview and based on the facts and stats uncovered there, below are the tips to take to the bookies on Saturday.
1st
#6 La Luna Rossa ($14)
Think third-up with the blinkers on this Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained Kiwi can score the upset over the locals. The daughter of Written Tycoon debuted down under with a half-length second in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and can close the gap getting out over a mile here. Jockey Damien Oliver riding is a big plus as he chases his sixth win in the race, while her 86% place rate is hard to knock.
2nd
#3 Global Glamour ($4.20)
Big money rolling in for Gai Waterhouse to win her first Thousand Guineas after celebrating her ninth Flight Stakes success last weekend with this daughter of Star Witness. Global Glamour was impressive from the inside alley at Randwick, is proven at a mile in similar company and is out to complete the double last achieved just three years ago by Guelph (2013). She is in winning form and can easily finish in the money with the right run from her mid-field position.
3rd
#4 Foxplay ($3.40)
The punters are starting to shy away from Foxplay, but she’s done nothing wrong this time in and has a definite class factor. Jockey Hugh Bowman has some concerns about how she’ll handle her first Melbourne run at the track, but she worked well at the Caulfield track through the week and got the tick of approval from fellow hoop Craig Newitt. Barrier is ideal, she’s unbeaten this time in and she’ll only be improving.
