On Saturday November 27, Brent Larsson’s veteran nine-year-old Hadabeclorka caused a massive upset, the $41 chance beating home a field full of more fancied and younger runners in the 2010 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot Racecourse.
Going out as a $41 chance in the $750,000 Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), Hurricane Sky gelding Hadabeclorka and champion local jockey William Pike were able to knuckle down and pull out a career best performance to beat home King Kool Kat ($11), ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Gerald Mosse, by a comprehensive one and a quarter lengths.
Favourite Whitefriars ($3.40) finished a further three quarters of a length away in third, while $4 second elect Waratah’s Secret was a respectable fourth producing the best final 600m sectional outside of the winner coming from a long way back.
Known as a non-genuine racehorse, Hadabeclorka looked in trouble early outpaced and settled well back in the field.
But a brilliant ride by Pike saw Hadabeclorka move up on the inside of the field, charging home along the rails to score their biggest career victory.
Hadabeclorka, relatively lightly-raced for their age, has now won nine of their 39 career starts for $825,005 in prize money.
Connections will run Hadabeclorka once more this preparation on December 11 in the Group 3 Scahill Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.
The final feature of the Festival of Perth Racing will be this Saturday’ $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), so lock your selections in at the best price by opening an account with Luxbet today!
