About the Race
The 163rd edition of the Group 1 $8.41 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) was won by the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Without A Fight who drew clear the closing stages off a gun ride by last year’s winning jockey Mark Zahra to become the 12th horse in history to complete the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double.
Zahra got into a lovely position on the fence settled back from barrier 16 after the first 400m before slicing his way through the field the closing stages, getting the gap on the home straight, and charging down the middle to hit the line over two lengths clear from Soulcombe.
Soulcombe was brave in second after missing the start by some three lengths while his stablemate, the fellow Chris Waller-trained Sheraz at triple-figures, was an upset third adding value to the 2023 Melbourne Cup trifecta.
