2017 Doncaster Mile Possible for Prelude Winner Spectroscope

Spectroscope has continued his unbeaten run of form in Australia at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon; weaving through the field in the final straight to win the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m).

The Medaglia D’Oro entire debuted for Godolphin Australia with a comfortable win on soft and over 1350m a fortnight ago, but trainer John O’Shea conceded that he was unsure how the horse would handle the extremely heavy conditions in Sydney this afternoon.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Corey Brown elected to take a position off the pace set by Echo Effect and Leebaz in the early stages of the Doncaster Prelude, who flew the barriers and ensured that the race would be run at a genuine tempo.

Faced with a wall of horses upon arriving at the final straight, Brown was forced to change direction paths with the four-year-old several times, but found a gap between runners and was greeted with a big turn of foot as the horse savaged the line to comfortably beat No Doubt and Marenostro.

O’Shea was thrilled with Spectroscope’s performance to win the Doncaster Prelude and revealed that next weekend’s featured Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) could figure for the horse if he comes through this afternoon’s run in good shape.

William Buick gave him a hell of a wrap last week and when William speaks, we tend to listen” O’Shea said.

“He hadn’t had a hard run, but Corey’s a seasoned campaigner and we had faith in whatever he’d choose to do today and has hasn’t let us down.

“He’s a really nice horse and we think he’s up to the top level, particularly in Australia. He’s really enjoyed his time here.

“We’ll see how he pulls up, but there’s an opportunity for us now to run him in the Doncaster with no weight and if he was to have a good week, we’d probably give consideration to doing that.”

Brown delivered a smart and patient ride aboard Spectroscope this afternoon and was thrilled that the horse was able to find passage to the line.

“For a fleeting moment I could feel John’s hand around my neck, because we were just caught in behind,” he said.

“All I needed was the runs and the runs came and he darted through them, he’s a lovely little horse.

“It was a bigger win than it looked and I think he’s going places this horse.”

Spectroscope will carry only 50kgs if O’Shea elects to saddle the horse in the Doncaster Mile 2017.
