Target In Sight Tops 2017 Magic Million Sprint Betting

Joe Pride’s veteran sprinter Target In Sight has opened narrow favourite in Magic Millions Sprint 2017 betting to win the last at the Gold Coast this Saturday in Queensland.

A full field of sixteen will face off in the Gold Coast Race 9 at 4:40pm (AEST) for the $1 million Myer Magic Millions Sprint (1200m).

The latest Magic Millions Sprint odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have two horses battling for top spot with Target In Sight at $4.50 sitting narrowly ahead of Dothraki at $4.80).

A seven-year-old son of Nadeem, Target In Sight hasn’t raced since he failed to finish in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm over the winter.

The bookies are taking no chances on his return from the inside alley in the Magic Millions Sprint field with Brenton Avdulla booked for the resuming ride over the horse’s pet distance (16-5-6-1).

Dothraki is another coming back after a break, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Mossman six-year-old’s last start producing a close sixth in Group 2 class down the Flemington straight on Derby Day.

He has trialled twice in Sydney since the right-handed way including a win over Testashadow at Rosehill over 1030m on December 30.

A good first-up performer, Dothraki is undefeated at the Gold Coast having won both his previous starts at the track and his 1200m record is also consistent (16-3-4-5) giving him every chance to post his first win since October 2015.

Occupying the third line of Magic Millions Sprint betting at $7 is Hidden Pearl, a last start winner from the Brisbane stables of Barry Lockwood.

The Hidden Dragon mare took out the Listed Falvelon Quality (1000m) at home at Eagle Farm first-up, her fourth win from five resuming runs.

She also does well second-up (4-2-1-0), is more of a short-distance 1000m horse but deserves a chance here on 55kg from a gun barrier six draw.

Rounding out the single-figure Magic Millions Sprint contenders at $8 each are Le Cordon Bleu and Viddora drawn in gates two and eight respectively.

Hawkes Racing’s Snitzel six-year-old Le Cordon Bleu gets things his way from the nice barrier second-up after his nice Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) win from out wide (13 of 15) on December 31.

Can be hit-and-miss, but he was third past the post in last year’s Magic Millions Sprint over 1100m and with the speed on can finish off strongly.

Viddora represents South Australian horseman Lloyd Kennewell and is second-up after the four-year-old mare finished a brave second to Hidden Pearl at Eagle Farm late last month.

Straturbo meanwhile could be over the odds at $26.

Gary Portelli’s last start Bribie Handicap winner in Brisbane won the Magic Millions Sprint two years ago over 1100m, and while the extra metres this season aren’t ideal, his barrier three draw is an advantage.

“It is 1200 metres now, which is probably not in his favour, but he has a good gate,” Portelli told The Sydney Morning Herald this week.
