Fourth Time Lucky for Zipping to Win 2010 Cox Plate?

Tomorrow Lloyd Williams’ in-form nine-year-old Zipping will take on a crack field in the 2010 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and late money has been coming in for the veteran to become the Cox Plate winner in his fourth attempt at the weight-for-age feature.

Trained by Robert Hickmott, Zipping is seemingly in career best form and is one of the only runners in the Cox Plate field tomorrow that hot favourite So You Think hasn’t beaten this season.

It will be the fourth time Zipping lines up in the $3 million Cox Plate tomorrow, unplaced in 2007 before placing second to Maldivian in 2008 and then finishing third to reigning champion So You Think 12 months ago.

The betting markets may be dominated by $1.55 favourite So You Think, but punters are starting to seek out the value runners capable of an upset and Zipping has had money come in for him today shortening his odds from $17 into $16 at Luxbet.

History may be against Zipping tomorrow, but form suggests this evergreen galloper can win the 2010 Cox Plate and become just the second nine-year-old in history along with Fields Of Omagh (2006) to become a Cox Plate winner.

Why Zipping Can Win the 2010 Cox Plate

  • Has twice won Group 1 races over 2000m in Melbourne this year with the Australian Cup and Turnbull Stakes
  • Coming off a sensational victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes where he beat the likes of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and fellow Cox Plate rival Shoot Out
  • No issue with the 59kg weight, which he has carried at his last three starts
  • Plenty of experience with three Sandown Classic victories, a win in the Moonee Valley Cup and two fourth place finishes in the Melbourne Cup on his resume
  • Previously connections have targeted the Melbourne Cup with Zipping, not expecting him to peak on Cox Plate Day, whereas this year the Cox Plate is the race he has been prepared for
  • The speed runners like Kiwi galloper Wall Street and More Joyous will bring tomorrow will suit Zippings’ racing style, likely to sit back and wait to pounce
  • Will be ridden by Lloyd Williams’ godson Nick Hall who has won two of his four races aboard Zipping
  • In a little fact superstitious punters will love, when Zipping made his first Cox Plate Day appearance winning the Moonee Valley Cup in 2006, Fields Of Omagh became the first nine-year-old in history to win the Cox Plate

Zippings’ connections will have their money on him that’s for sure.

“His preparation thus far has been perfect and one thing I can assure you is he’s there in absolute career-best form and I reckon he’ll put on a real show on the day,” Nick Williams, son of owner Lloyd Williams, said.

So if you fancy an upset and are looking for the roughie to pick tomorrow, put your money on Zipping at a great price through Luxbet now!
