2016 Lord Mayor’s Cup Betting Odds

The Lord Mayor’s Cup 2016 is one of the key support acts on the Doomben 10,000 Day card in Brisbane on Saturday, betting for the mile clash led by the Chris Waller-trained Amovatio.

Running as Doomben Race 6 at 3:21pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Programmed Property Services Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) has attracted a field of 15 weight-for-age hopefuls.

Amovatio heads the latest Lord Mayor’s Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.60 for the win on the back of his good lead-up form in New South Wales.

Jumping from gate eight with apprentice Rory Hutchings continuing his association on the Al Maher five-year-old, the gelding won the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) two back.

Last start on May 13 he travelled to Scone and finished a very close second in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m), a gun lead-up to his Brisbane debut this weekend.

A further four runners are at single-figures in the Lord Mayor’s Cup betting markets this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including market mover Mighty Lucky ($6 into $5).

Drawn in barrier six, the Fred Cowell-trained six-year-old from Gosford was runner-up to Amovatio in the Hawkesbury Cup on April 30 before a sixth at Scone in a blanket finish.

Mighty Lucky was still only 0.6 lengths off the Scone Cup winner a fortnight back carrying 60kg and will appreciate coming back to equal weights with 59kg at WFA at Doomben.

The next best in betting at $7 are Worthy Cause and Hopfgarten, before Kool Kompany rounds out the single figure hopes at $8.50.

The Sunshine Coast’s John Zielke prepares four-year-old Choisir stallion Worthy Cause who was runner-up at home in Black-Type company first-up two back before a fourth at the Gold Coast on May 7 behind Coolring in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m).

He has had eight previous Doomben runs for two wins, two seconds and a third that came last December in the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m).

Hopfgarten won first-up at the Sunshine Coast defeating Worthy Cause by a half-length on April 23 before a Prime Minister’s sixth, the Robert Heathcote-trained Mossman five-year-old after his fifth Doomben win at his 16th start at the track.

Kool Kompany meanwhile is the other Waller-trained runner in the Lord Mayor’s Cup field, Glen Colless booked to ride the out-of-form Jeremy stallion who hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 Craven Stakes (1609m) in Europe in April last year.

Other longer priced hopes with claims for an upset include the Joe Pride-trained stallion Rock Sturdy ($13) out to improve on an eighth in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at the track last Saturday, John O’Shea’s Scone Cup third placegetter Malice ($15) and the Ciaron Maher-trained Akavoroun ($15).
