Archives Heads 2016 Hampden Stakes Field & Betting

Lightly-raced Godolphin galloper Archives is favourite in betting to break his maiden status at career start number two after drawing the inside alley in Saturday’s Hampden Stakes 2016 at Doomben Racecourse.

Running as Race 3 at 1:21pm (AEST) on the Doomben Cup Day card, this season’s $100,000 Listed McGrath Estate Agents Hampden Stakes (1200m) features a field of 14 two-year-olds.

Leading the latest Hampden Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.80 for the win in an open market of promising juveniles is the John O’Shea-trained Helmet colt Archives.

James McDonald rides the nicely-bred youngster from barrier one on Saturday on the back of a third on debut over 1100m at Rosehill a fortnight ago from the same alley.

Hot on Archives’ heels in the Hampden Stakes betting markets this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival at $5 is market mover Jericho drawn the other end of the field out in gate 10 for jockey Blake Shinn to overcome.

Early money has seen the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Smart Missile colt firm in from an opening price of $7.50, Jericho having had two runs in Sydney to date.

Back in November he finished third to subsequent Golden Slipper runner-up and Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winning filly Yankee Rose at Rosehill over 1100m.

First-up this campaign he returned to break his maiden status at Warwick Farm on May 4 over 1100m as the odds-on favourite, a feat he’s out to repeat in Black-Type company in Queensland over 100m further.

Three other runners are also under $10 to win with Legerity ($6) in the outside alley (14 of 14), Baltic Whisper ($6.50) drawn better in barrier two and Redouble ($9) coming off a winning debut.

Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes train Snitzel colt Legerity who has had four runs to date for three top three runs including a win over 1100m at Rosehill two weeks ago ahead of his stakes debut on the weekend.

Runner-up in the same two-years-old handicap in Sydney, fellow Hampden Stakes acceptor Baltic Whisper was defeated only a half-length in the Bjorn Baker-trained son of Charge Forward’s debut run that he is tipped to improve on this weekend with a start now on the record.

Redouble is another Hawkes Racing-trained Sydney youngster making a raid in Brisbane on Saturday, the Redoute’s Choice colt having saluted over the 1200m distance at Canterbury in late April.

At more generous odds and after an upset include local Kelly Schweida-trained Sebring gelding Oink ($10) coming off a second at the Gold Coast behind Royal Tithe in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial (1200m), Stuart Kendrick’s fourth placed Show A Hart colt in the same lead-up from May 7 Charnley River ($14) and the Ciaron Maher-trained Not A Single Doubt filly Emphatically ($15) who ran fifth in the Ken Russell in her Queensland debut.
