Bart Cummings’ star galloper So You Think has risen to the top of the 2010 Melbourne Cup betting markets, now the odds-on favourite to win the famous Flemington handicap after winning the Yalumba Stakes with ease on Saturday.
High Chaparral four-year-old So You Think is now the clear $5.50 favourite, slashed from $11, to win the $6 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 at [sportsbet] after defeating the likes of Alcopop and Whobegotyou in the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The victory was So You Think’s third straight this spring following earlier success in the Memsie Stakes and Underwood Stakes, his second Group 1 win on the trot.

So You Think is also now the hot favourite to make it back-to-back Cox Plate victories on October 23, the reigning champion at a very short quote of $1.65 in the Cox Plate markets at [sportsbet].
Despite his dominance in the Melbourne Cup betting, So You Think is yet to secure a spot in the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field not having passed the first ballot clause sitting well down the order of elimination in 53rd.
So You Think must run first or second in the Cox Plate to be eligible for a Melbourne Cup run, but having emerged as the authoritative weight-for-age runner in the country he should have the Cox Plate in the bag.
Yalumba Stakes runner-up Alcopop also looks to be back in form and ready to take on the Melbourne Cup field for a second year in a row after going out as the favourite in 2009 before finishing sixth to Shocking.
On Saturday, the Jake Stephens-trained Alcopop was impressive when running down Whobegotyou and pulling away to claim second place in the Yalumba seemingly peeking at the right time.
Following the six-year-olds’ courageous run, Sportsbet have now shortened their price on Alcopop to win the Melbourne Cup into the $11 third elect following last year’s winner Shocking at $8.50.
Alcopop is also now the second-favourite in the Caulfield Cup betting at $6 through Sportsbet.
Sitting 20th on the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup, which has a field limit of 18, Alcopop is expected to gain a run after C’est Le Guerre and Once Were Wild are likely to miss the race.
The other big mover in the Melbourne Cup markets following the Caulfield Guineas Day results from Saturday is the Lloyd Williams-owned Linton, now at $12 to win.
Lightly-raced Galileo grey Linton stormed home to win the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) earning a Caulfield Cup exemption.
But connections will skip this Saturday’s $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), giving the emerging stayer time to recover before contesting the 150th Melbourne Cup.
