2016 Ken Russell Memorial Classic Field & Betting: Impending Odds-On

The lightly-raced Impending is the dominant odds-on favourite in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic 2016 markets to remain undefeated with a second career win at the Gold Coast Racecourse this weekend.

The nicely-bred Lonhro colt from the Godolphin stables of John O’Shea is one of 14 remaining two-year-olds in the mix for Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m).

Kicking off the Black-Type action of A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, the Ken Russell Memorial Classic field originally had 15 acceptances.

Peter Robl scratched his runner Sugarparma (14) from the mix early however after the Snitzel filly drew wide in gate 14.

At a firming $1.85 for the win and drawn midfield in barrier seven for one of Sydney’s leading jockeys James McDonald, Impending comes off a winning debut over 1100m at Rosehill from a fortnight back.

McDonald was aboard for that big two and a half length win the progressive youngster is out to repeat in better company this weekend.

There is just one other hope under $10 for the win in the latest Ken Russell Memorial Classic betting markets with Emphatically at $7 after a gun barrier three draw.

Prepared in Melbourne by Ciaron Maher the Not A Single Doubt filly has had seven runs but remains a maiden heading into the Group 3.

She is a multiple Group 3 placegetter however, most recently finishing second to Thyme For Roses in Flemington’s Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m).

Her latest run though was an eighth to Missrock at Randwick in the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) from the outside alley (11), form she is tipped to improve on this weekend from the better barrier.

The next best in betting at more generous odds for an upset in the juveniles’ clash is Sundance ($11) drawn one wider in gate four.

Jeff Lloyd rides the local Toby Edmonds-trained I Am Invincible colt who has winning stakes form on the record already thanks to his nearly five-length victory in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) in Brisbane over the summer.

His last start was at the Gold Coast track on Boxing Day when fifth to Zelady’s Night Out in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Plate (1200m).

He has trialled twice since including a winning 1000m hit-out by an impressive five and half lengths at Deagon on April 26, which bodes well ahead of his return on Saturday.

Three other two-year-olds follow at $12 in the current markets with the consistent Kelly Schweida-trained son of Sebring Oink, Stuart Kendrick’s Show A Heart colt Charnley River from the Sunshine Coast and returning Show A Heart filly Royal Tithe all boasting genuine claims at the title.
