2016 George Ryder Stakes Field: Winx Faces 7 Rivals

Four-time Group 1 winning mare Winx has scared away all but seven rivals for her shot at an eight straight turf triumph in the George Ryder Stakes 2016 at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday.

Sydney’s best Chris Waller prepared a trio of winners in the $1 million Group 1 China Horse Club George Ryder Stakes (1500m), which runs as Race 5 at 3:10pm (AEDT) this weekend, with Danleigh (2010), Rangirangdoo (2011) and Metal Bender (2012).

This Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival he will saddle-up one of the shortest-priced favourites in history with his $4 million earning daughter of Street Cry, Winx.

She hasn’t been defeated since an ATC Oaks second in April last year and has won four times in elite level company since including the Cox Plate in the spring and the Chipping Norton Stakes over the mile last time out on February 27 at Randwick.

The George Ryder Stakes sees her drop down in distance on Saturday, but from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman staying on she will still jump the punters’ pick looking to become the first mare to win the race since Heat Of The Moment way back in 1986.

Chris Waller shoots for a fourth George Ryder Stakes win this weekend with star mare Winx, Kermadec and Press Statement

Waller in fact dominates this season’s George Ryder Stakes field not only with Winx but also numbers-wise saddling up a total of three hopefuls in the weight-for-age clash.

His other runners are the reigning Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec and class three-year-old Press Statement drawn in barriers six and one respectively.

Teofilo four-year-old Kermadec is second-up on Saturday following a good third in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 5 when beaten only one and a half-lengths.

No four-year-old has won the George Ryder Stakes since Lonhro (2003) for his first of two victories, but the Canterbury Stakes has produced three of the past five winners.

Dual Group 1 winning Hinchinbrook colt Press Statement gets the inside alley with top Sydney jockey James McDonald riding, barrier one last producing a winner in Rangirangdoo (2011).

The last three-year-old to take out the race meanwhile was Pierro (2013), while McDonald saluted aboard 10/1 shot Real Impact (2015) from Japan in last year’s George Ryder Stakes.

Outside of Waller’s trio the best of the rest is the Murray Baker-trained New Zealand visitor Turn Me Loose after his third Group 1 win in Australia.

His first was in the Emirates Stakes over the mile in the spring, which followed the gun four-year-old’s Crystal Mile win at Moonee Valley.

Second-up this time in he improved on a CF Orr Stakes fourth to win the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, on Saturday looking to become the first George Ryder winner to come off a Melbourne lead-up since Haradasun (2007).

Along with Winx the other two mares out to break the drought of female gallopers in the event are the John Thompson-trained First Seal and Tinto for Queensland’s Rex Lipp drawn in gates five and four respectively.

Winner of the 2014 Flight Stakes, First Seal is third-up on Saturday following two brilliant runs this campaign having won the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) first-up before her Canterbury Stakes second.

Also a Group 1 winner, Red Dazzler five-year-old Tinto is best known for her 2014 Queensland Oaks success, but is likely suited to more distance than she’ll get this weekend.
