Jerilderie Letter Tops 2016 Tasmanian Derby Nominations

Flying three-year-old Jerilderie Letter is the headline nomination for Friday’s Tasmanian Derby 2016 at Hobart Racecourse as the Adam Trinder-trained gelding chases his third black-type win on the trot.

Coming off a string of three straight Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival victories, the son of Bushranger gelding saluted in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) two back before winning again in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) on January 24.

This weekend he goes up in distance again having his first run over the 2200m where success in the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Derby will see him complete the Tasmanian Three-Years-Old Triple Crown.

He is one of just 10 early Tasmanian Derby entries along with the next best two over the line in the Hobart Guineas last start.

The Patrick Payne-trained Victorian raider Al Shameel was runner-up beaten a length in the lead-up race in his maiden Tasmanian run, the son of Zabeel back for another shot in the Apple Isle.

He has run second in his four most recent runs and is a perennial bridesmaid that could be suited to the extra metres in his rematch with Jerilderie Letter.

Hobart Guineas third placegetter Siocra is locally trained at Spreyton by Barry Campbell, of Admiral fame, the Sharkbite gelding fourth in the Tasmanian Guineas two back.

Along with Al Shameel two of the other notable visiting Victorian three-year-olds in the Tasmanian Derby mix this season are the Peter Moody-trained filly All That I Know and Darren Weir’s Howard Be Thy Name.

Moody’s daughter of More Than Ready All That I Know, the sole filly nominated for the Tas Derby this year, comes off her maiden win from January 22 at Cranbourne where she saluted over the mile on a Heavy (8) track by three lengths, her longest distanced start to date.

Howard Be Thy Name also won his last start, the Redoute’s Choice colt saluting over the mile at Ballarat on January 27 by two and a half lengths.

Other notable Tasmanian Derby hopes include the John Blacker-trained Special Shot coming off a third over 1600m at the track from January 24 and John McArdle’s Tough Speed gelding Trouble Bound from Victoria.

Blacker has also nominated for Strathalbyn who is out to atone for an eighth in the Tasmanian Guineas and last when crossing 14 lengths away seventh to Jerilderie Letter in the Hobart Guineas last start.

See below for the latest Tasmanian Derby 2016 nominations, the final field of acceptances out on Tuesday morning.
