Jeremy Sylvester’s Cessnock-trained four-year-old Three Sheets has opened favourite to take out the Magic Millions Country Cup 2016 at the Gold Coast Racecourse in Queensland this weekend.
Running as Race 2 at 12:15pm, this Saturday’s $250,000 Sky Racing Magic Millions Country Cup (1200m) attracted an above capacity field with first emergency Croupier already getting a run for the scratched Sterno.
Top of the current Magic Millions Country Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the full nine-race Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day card on Saturday, is Stratum gelding Three Sheets at $4.
Drawn a treat in barrier three with the best provincial hoop in the country Robert Thompson booked for the ride, the galloper gets in on the 54kg minimum and comes off a second carrying 57.5kg at Doomben over 1110m from New Year’s Day in a Colts, Geldings & Entries Class 3 Plate.
Following closely in the Magic Millions Country Cup odds at $5 is Joe Cleary’s War Pass five-year-old War Jet who is at the opposite end of the weight scale carrying 58kg with Noel Callow to ride from barrier seven.
War Jet boasts a gun record over the 1200m with two wins and two seconds from five previous starts at the distance he is back down to on Saturday.
Last time out back in October at Randwick he was sixth over a mile before winning a Canberra trial at home at Queanbeyan over 900m on December 15.
Just two other hopes are under double figures for the win with Mestalla and Star Wars both at $8 but drawn at very different ends of the field with gates 18 and two respectively.
Former champion Queensland hoop Chris Munce prepares Northern Meteor five-year-old Mestalla who comes off a second over 1200m at Doomben back in November last year.
Star Wars should get an excellent ride from his nice gate with Brenton Avdulla in charge of the Gerald Ryan-trained son of Starcraft.
The in-form five-year-old is second-up on Saturday having won over 1300m at Hawkesbury on December 5 carting a much heftier 60.5kg, the drop back to 54kg this weekend a big plus.
The horse also has previous winning form at the Gold Coast track over 1400m back in June when overcoming barrier 13 of 16 to take out a Class 1 last winter.
The best of the double figure hopes to take out the Magic Millions Country Cup this Queensland Summer Racing Carnival are Boris Badenov ($10), the rails-drawn Real Favulous ($10) and market mover Burleigh Bullet ($11).
Munce also prepares Magic Albert gelding Boris Badenov whose last run was back in September last year when runner-up to Noogoora Burr over 1400m.
From three 1200m runs he boasts two seconds and a third and comes off a winning Sunshine Coast trial over 850m last month.
Real Favulous is drawn the inside alley for champion interstate hoop Glen Boss, Donald Baker’s last start winning son of Real Saga having saluted over the 1200m at Warwick on Boxing Day.
The Darryl Hansen-trained All Bar One mare Burleigh Bullet didn’t fare as well in the Magic Millions Country Cup barrier draw, the smart four-year-old needing luck from 17 after her second over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast on December 27 from a better barrier three of eight draw.
